Larger, higher-resolution videoboard debuts at The Bosh

CHAPEL HILL — The fan experience at Boshamer Stadium may have just got better.

Carolina’s much-anticipated new videoboard debuted Tuesday at The Bosh in a 10–6 win over Queens, providing a clearer and larger display.

The resolution of 10 millimeters — the distance between the pixels — is half what it was for the previous board, making the resolution twice as clear. The width of 46½ feet is the same as the old board, but it’s 23½ feet tall, 14 feet more than the previous board.

“We’re always trying to improve content and improve the fan experience across all the groups here on campus that impact what a fan sees when they walk through the doors or the gates or any of those kinds of things,” said Ken Cleary, UNC’s assistant athletic director for new media. “So, we’re very excited to have some new things.”

There were complaints from some fans that the lineups on the left side of the board and some of the numbers were difficult to read because of the font size. The balls, strikes and outs are shown as circles for each instead of numbers.

Carolina responded to the criticism, with the board organization much improved for Thursday’s game against Miami.

Until Tuesday’s game against Queens, a banner listing Carolina’s College World Series appearances covered the old electronic scoreboard that had stopped working. The parts to repair it weren’t available. Fans could view linescore and other information for earlier games by looking at the old video board.

All elements are now displayed on the larger video board. There were no replays shown on the board Tuesday.

Installed by Outfront Media, the videoboard is the third-largest on campus behind the boards at Kenan Stadium and the Smith Center, slightly larger than the ones at Shelton Stadium and Dorrance Field. There are also boards at the Koury Natatorium and the Carolina Track & Field Complex.

“Improving the fan experience doesn’t always have to be these huge new bells and whistles, which we love those as well,” Cleary said. “But sometimes it’s presenting all the game information in a more legible way, that makes it easier to follow along with what’s going on with the game. In addition to you know, the videos can be bigger and sound better and all those kinds of things with us to make those better as well.”

Pregame, postgame and between innings, UNC will use the entire board for video. During innings, replays will be shown in a confined window so that the basic elements of the scoreboard remain displayed.

When the umpires are conducting a video review, Carolina is allowed to show the replay once at normal speed.

  1. The new video board was not readable by me or my friend. The font was too small and the motion on the right side of the board was distracting.
