UNC’s men to face Campbell in last of 12 non-conference games

By R.L. Bynum

North Carolina’s men’s basketball team will play 12 non-conference games in the upcoming season, concluding with a home game against Campbell.

Made for March reported that the program’s first game against the Camels is set for Sunday, Dec. 29.

The NCAA allows teams to play 31 games, which means 11 non-conference games for ACC teams since they play 20 league games. But the Tar Heels will play 12 non-conference games because of their Nov. 22 game at Hawaii on its way to the Maui Invitational. As Isaac Schade reported, the NCAA allows one non-conference game each season in either Alaska or Hawaii to not count toward the total of 31 regular-season games.

The Maui Invitational bracket and schedule are expected to be announced in July, and the ACC generally announces the basketball schedules in September.

The Camels, who haven’t made the NCAA tournament since 1992, went 16–18 two seasons ago in their final year in the Big South and were 14–18 last season in their first year in the CAA.

UNC has no games scheduled during final exams, which run Dec. 6–13, although the ACC still could schedule a league game during that time.

The Tar Heels host Alabama in the second ACC/SEC Challenge on Dec. 4 and aren’t scheduled to play again until the Dec. 14 home game against La Salle.

Carolina opens the season on Nov. 4 in the Smith Center against Elon before visiting Kansas on Nov. 8. The game at Hawaii comes after the Nov. 15 home game against American.

The Tar Heels play three games at the Maui Invitational, which features two-time reigning national champion UConn, as well as Auburn, Colorado, Dayton, Iowa State, Memphis and Michigan State.

UNC’s other non-conference games are the Dec. 17 Jumpman Invitational matchup in Charlotte against Florida and the 3 p.m. Dec. 21 CBS Sports Classic game against UCLA at Madison Square Garden.
