Tar Heels in NBA: Bullock scores 20, hits huge 3s in win; White hurt; Davis doesn’t play but gets technical foul

By R.L. Bynum

Reggie Bullock has evidently gained the confidence of Dallas Mavericks coach Jason Kidd with his outstanding play of late.

Bullock, starting for the first time since Jan. 7 and for only the 14th time this season, scored 20 points and made two clutch 3-pointers down the stretch in the Mavs’ 107–98 home victory Friday over the Philadelphia 76ers.

“You saw Reggie making some big shots for us again,” said Kidd, whose team trailed by 16 in the second quarter

Bullock’s three games with at least 20 points this season have all come in the last four games. He did that five times in 65 games last season. He has scored in double figures in four consecutive games for the first time since last May for New York.

Bullock, who pulled down six rebounds, scored four 3-pointers to give him eight games with at least four this season.

Philadelphia led 89–88 midway through the fourth quarter before consecutive Bullock 3-pointers ignited an 8–2 Mavericks run to put them ahead 96–91, and they never trailed after that.

Luka Doncic had 33 points, 13 rebounds and 15 assists for Dallas.

“The dude is elite,” Bullock said of Doncic. “He’s an elite passer and elite scorer. He gets everyone else involved. He can break his player down in iso, and he’s still young, so having a player like that who is so in control and at a young age, the future is definitely bright for him, and he led us to a win tonight.”

The game was delayed 44 minutes in the first quarter when one of the rims was deemed to be crooked.

“It was enough time for us to get our defense right,” Bullock said after Dallas trailed 33–24 heading into the second quarter.

Danny Green came off the bench for the Sixers after starting the previous game and had four points, six rebounds in 25 minutes.

Theo Pinson wasn’t active for the game and didn’t play Friday for the Texas Legends, the Mavs’ G League team.

Cole Anthony and the Orlando Magic had the night off. But on Friday night, UNC legend James Worthy picked Anthony to play for the Young Stars team that he will coach during that event on Friday, Feb. 18 in Cleveland. Anthony will also compete in the Slam Dunk contest on Saturday, Feb. 19.

Day’Ron Sharpe contributed 11 points, eight rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block in Brooklyn’s 125–102 loss at Utah. The Nets (29–23) have lost seven consecutive games and are rumored to be in talks to trade James Harden to Philadelphia.

Sharpe tied his season-high with six offensive rebounds.

Coby White has had plenty of frustrations since getting hurt in the offseason and added to that when he missed Friday’s 122–115 win at Indiana with a right adductor strain.

He missed the first 13 games of the season recovering from surgery to repair a torn left labrum and missed five December games while in the NBA’s health-and-safety protocols.

When starting point guard Lonzo Ball went down with a left meniscus tear, White figured to become a starter while he was out. White did start the first five games after the injury but rookie Ayo Dosunmu out of Illinois has instead been Chicago’s starter since then.

Tony Bradey was scoreless with six rebounds in eight minutes for the Bulls.

The fact that Ed Davis didn’t play (coach’s decision) in Cleveland’s 102–101 win at Charlotte wasn’t that odd. There have been many games this season when he didn’t get off the bench. What was odd is that he still got into the action inadvertently.

From the bench with 4:44 left in the game, he reached out and touched the back of Charlotte’s Terry Rozier. Although the Cavaliers contended that the whistle had already blown, Davis was assessed a technical foul.
