With two five-star Class of 2023 commitments already, UNC pursuing a third

Coach Hubert Davis has secured two five-star Class of 2023 commitments and is pursuing a third.

According to Jeff Borzello of ESPN, representatives from Carolina were set to meet with 6–foot–10, 175-pound forward Matas Buzelis on Thursday. He plays for nationally prominent Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H.

Buzelis is ranked the No. 6 recruit in the class by Rivals and 247Sports, No. 11 by ESPN and No. 21 by On3.

He scored 18 points to lead his school to a 79–61 victory in March over Northfield Mount Herman in the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council AAA championship.

Wednesday, the Tar Heels secured a commitment from five-star power forward G.G. Jackson after five-star combo guard Simeon Wilcher committed in October.

According to 247Sports, Duke and Kentucky are the leaders for Buzelis, although On3 puts the Wildcats, Wake Forest and Florida State at the top. The Chicago native has visited DePaul, Florida State, Kentucky, Providence, Purdue and Wake Forest.

This sets up another one of many recruiting battles likely to come between Davis and Duke coach John Scheyer.

The 247Sports’ Class of 2023 rankings currently have Duke No. 1 with five commitments and UNC No. 2 with two commitments.

  1. Get ‘m Hubert!. Losing Armando is tough to replace. Any word on Jefferson’s heath as McCoy isn’t the solution and Puff needs strength and weight IMO.
