Styles reportedly commits to N.C. State

After a season at Georgetown, former UNC wing Dontrez Styles is coming back to his home state. Styles, who is from Kinston, has committed to N.C. State, according to Joe Tipton of On3.com.

He joins a Wolfpack program on the upswing after winning the ACC title and making an amazing run to the Final Four.

Styles will be at least the fourth men’s basketball player to play for UNC and N.C. State. In the 1940s, three players went from State to UNC — Bernie Mock, Fred Swartzberg and Bones McKinney. Former Carolina guard Buzz Peterson, a member of the 1982 national championship team, was an assistant coach at N.C. State from 1990 to 1993.

Styles is the second former UNC to find a new home after one season at his second school. After playing his freshman season at Carolina and sophomore season at Virginia Tech, Tyler Nickel is headed to Vanderbilt.

Styles was second on the Hoyas team in scoring at 12.8 points per game. Georgetown struggled in Coach Ed Cooley’s first season, going 9–23 overall and 2–18 in the Big East.

Styles started all 32 games for Georgetown after never starting and only playing 25 games in his two seasons at Carolina. He scored at least 20 points five times, including a career-high 26 points in a Nov. 18 victory over Mount St. Mary’s.

After shooting 22.2% from 3-point range as a Tar Heel, he shot 36.8% from outside the arc last season.

  1. This transfer portal has turned college basketball into a joke. Could you have imagined some real UNC player in the past transferring to NC State or vice versa? Chris Brust or Jeff Lebo riding the pine and then going to State the next year?
