UNC reportedly to host Georgetown next season in first game of home-and-home series

By R.L. Bynum

North Carolina will reportedly begin a home-and-home men’s basketball series with Georgetown starting next season with a game in Chapel Hill.

Jon Rothstein reported the news on Wednesday, suggesting that the game will be played in December. Carolina has one more spot to fill on its nonconference schedule.

The Hoyas lead the series 5–4, having won the last two meetings: 79–74 in the 2003 NIT and 96–84 in overtime during the Eastern Regional championship game of the 2007 NCAA tournament in the Meadowlands.

The most notable meeting, of course, was UNC’s 63–62 victory at the New Orleans Superdome in the 1982 national championship game, when Michael Jordan hit the game-winning shot and Fred Brown threw an errant pass to James Worthy.

The Hoyas went 18–16 last season and lost 81–69 to Nebraska in the second round of the College Basketball Crown tournament. Next season will be Ed Cooley’s third as the head coach of Georgetown. The Hoyas went 9–23 in 2023–24, his first at the school after 12 seasons at Providence.

Carolina opens the season on Nov. 3 at home against Central Arkansas.

Roster assuming all players with eligibility other than Caleb Wilson, Henri Veesaar and the seven players who entered the transfer portal return, which would put UNC one under the 15-player limit. The class for next season is listed.
