UNC fires offensive and special-teams coordinators

North Carolina fired offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens and special teams coordinator Mike Priefer on Friday.

The decision comes after a year marked by inconsistency on offense in a 4–8 season.

“We want to thank Coach Kitchens and Coach Priefer for their commitment and many contributions to our program and student-athletes,” UNC coach Bill Belichick said in a statement. “We wish them both nothing but the best in their future endeavors.”

Kitchens, a former NFL head coach, joined UNC to bring pro-style concepts to the Tar Heels’ attack and was the interim head coach for last season’s Fenway Bowl loss to UConn. Priefer brought years of special teams experience from the NFL.

UNC ranked 129th in the country in total offense (288.8 yards per game), 102nd in passing offense (183.5), 127th in rushing offense (105.3; last in the ACC), 121st in scoring (19.2 points per game) and 118th in yards per play (4.7).

Belichick did not announce immediate replacements.

The moves come in a pivotal offseason for the Tar Heels as they look to reset and build for a rebound season in 2026.
