from that 14 nothing run that Elon had
0:03
to take the lead what do you take from
0:05
that run and what do you want them to
0:06
take from it well I think there's a lot
0:09
to learn from the entire game I think it
0:12
it's an opportunity to grow um and get
0:15
better
0:17
um in a number of different areas on
0:19
both ends of the floor so it you know
0:22
it's um it's the first game of the
0:25
season and um there are things that I
0:29
was really proud of that I thought the
0:30
team did really well and did at a high
0:33
level um and there's things that um
0:36
we've got to improve on and uh we feel
0:40
um very fortunate and uh to be able to
0:43
pull away I think Elon was up 7371 and
0:47
you know we talked about in the Huddle
0:48
how are you going to react how you going
0:50
to respond and that this is actually the
0:53
perfect game and a perfect situation to
0:55
be in is because this this will help us
0:58
grow this will help us get to be the
1:00
team that we want to become and so from
1:01
that standpoint um there is a lot to
1:03
learn from it and um it's it's nice to
1:06
learn from it uh from a victory did you
1:09
feel there was anything in particular
1:11
you guys maybe got away from doing that
1:13
allowed Evon to kind of come back and
1:14
eventually take that twoo yeah you know
1:17
just you know from a defensive
1:18
standpoint uh in the second half for uh
1:22
for the first part of the second half uh
1:24
they were shooting 60% from the field
1:26
they shot 50 in the second half so I've
1:29
been straightforward clear and direct
1:31
about for us to be the best team that we
1:33
can possibly become we've got to be a
1:35
great defensive team and allowing a team
1:37
to shoot 50 to 60% the second half is
1:39
just not going to get it done and then
1:41
on the offensive end just uh being able
1:43
to get you know uh the shots that we
1:46
want you know Elon does a really good
1:48
job of mixing up their defenses going
1:51
from man to Zone and um at times I felt
1:55
like it took us out of rhythm and uh in
1:58
terms of the shots that were trying to
2:00
get and there were a lot of times it was
2:03
we were shooting shots up against the
2:04
shot clock and um and then we started to
2:09
find the Rhythm in terms of what we
2:11
needed to do on the offensive end but um
2:14
the defense in the second half was not
2:16
at the level that we want to play at
2:18
Hubert as you said you guys are trailing
2:20
in the final what seven six and a half
2:22
minutes of the game what what was your
2:23
message at that point uh to these guys
2:26
about responding yeah you know I was um
2:29
sorry guys
2:31
um um I did exactly say that in the
2:34
Huddle I said I'm glad that we're in
2:35
this situation I said we're going to be
2:37
in this situation a number of times and
2:40
you know we've talked about at practice
2:42
how we're going to react how we're going
2:43
to respond and you said from a defensive
2:45
standpoint we have to be sound and
2:47
disciplined we've got to get stops we
2:49
got to finish uh uh the defensive
2:52
possession with gang rebounding and then
2:55
on the offensive end you got to take
2:56
care of the basketball we got to get
2:58
shots and get the shots to the guys that
3:00
can make shots and I thought we were
3:02
really intentional about doing that um I
3:05
think we went on 110 run and
3:09
um uh from that standpoint for the first
3:13
game I mean there's a lot to learn I
3:15
mean we we've gone on the road at
3:16
Memphis we've played here at home and
3:18
now we play against a really good Elon
3:19
team and it's a we're down by two with
3:22
seven minutes to go there there's a lot
3:24
to learn from and to be encouraged about
3:27
about how we've responded in those
3:29
situations how important was it to have
3:31
a player like RJ Davis you're down by
3:32
two very
3:34
important what saying is you have a
3:36
player down by two and then you have
3:39
that leader like RJ Davis that really
3:40
just takes the rain he had been cold for
3:42
most of the day on the field a shooting
3:45
thing like only shot three field goals I
3:47
made three field goals so how important
3:49
was that at that moment to have him step
3:51
up and have the energy his energy just
3:54
uh pered through the entire team well
3:56
you need in those situations you need
3:57
guys to be able to step up it's not just
3:59
from points it's also energy effort
4:01
plays I mentioned before jayw wash and
4:04
Elliots diving on the loose ball getting
4:06
defensive stops and rebounds there's a
4:09
number of ways that you can make
4:10
impactful plays in order to uh help your
4:13
team uh be successful obviously having
4:16
RJ a fifth year senior first team
4:18
All-American in those situations that's
4:20
nice to have as a coach and it's nice to
4:22
have as players out there on the floor
4:25
um it's nothing new for him um he's
4:28
somebody that has always stepped up
4:30
throughout his entire career and he was
4:32
able to do that tonight first possession
4:34
of the game Elliot knocks down that
4:35
three was that designed for him and then
4:38
he made three out of four I think on the
4:39
night a a new career high said he worked
4:42
on it a lot in the offseason have you
4:43
seen that kind of improvement from him
4:45
yeah I have I mean he worked extremely
4:47
hard um over the summer um in terms of
4:52
his shot uh he was a a really good
4:56
shooter last year um shots just didn't
4:59
go in I think the biggest difference in
5:01
terms in regards to his shot is just the
5:04
times and the shot selection you know
5:06
he's he's so much more mature and poised
5:09
out there on the floor very confident
5:12
understands when to take a shot when not
5:14
to obviously his ability to distribute
5:16
the basketball he's playing at a high
5:18
level Hubert Seth said that the guys
5:22
maybe got a little selfish in the second
5:23
half on offense when Elon was making
5:25
their run did you uh see that from where
5:28
you were and what do you think
5:30
contributed to that no uh this is not a
5:32
selfish team there there's not one bit
5:34
of selfishness on this team um I've
5:36
never seen that since this team has come
5:39
together I didn't see that tonight
5:43
um that's never come into my mind in
5:46
regards to this team RJ Elliot couple
5:49
more RJ Elliott and Seth combined 56
5:51
points you think that that cohesion
5:53
between those three is natural or has it
5:56
been built up in the past couple months
5:57
in practice and stuff like that well I
5:59
mean those guys I mean we need them to
6:02
step up every every night and they've
6:05
done it in practice so for it to play
6:07
out in the game is is not surprising to
6:10
me but for us to be the team that we
6:13
want to become everybody has to step up
6:15
just is what it is and so we need
6:18
everybody playing at a high level and
6:20
when everyone is locked in and playing
6:22
at a high level um this is a team that I
6:26
think has really good potential
6:29
good minutes tonight um The Freshman
6:31
Drake and Yan got pretty good minutes
6:33
how' you feel about their impact in
6:34
their first game yeah I thought they did
6:36
some really good things both Ian and and
6:39
Drake you know one of the things that it
6:42
they just keep getting better every
6:44
practice and every game you know one of
6:46
the things that I think people lose
6:49
sight of is just the transition from
6:51
high school to this level is real and so
6:54
you can be first team McDonald's
6:56
All-American and still playing at this
6:58
level um it takes time and I really love
7:01
how they have bought in
7:03
defensively um they do a good job but
7:06
not particularly on the stat sheet but
7:08
they do a really good job of rebounding
7:09
the basketball and then on the offensive
7:11
end you know they can create and make
7:13
shots and so um they're going to play a
7:15
ton of minutes this year we need them to
7:17
step up and be big and I'm so glad that
7:19
they're here last two Andrew and Adam
7:21
how much this seen that much Zone this
7:23
early in the year especially with a dude
7:25
like they had in the middle of it help
7:27
you guys moving forward no that that
7:29
really help helps you know I
7:33
again their their ability to switch
7:37
defenses from man to Zone and then have
7:41
a
7:42
74 center right there in the middle that
7:45
that causes problems and so
7:49
um that's why I say this is a great
7:51
learning experience for us because
7:53
people are going to play zone we're
7:55
going to play against teams that have
7:56
tremendous size and so um we're going to
7:59
have to rebound we're going to have to
8:00
dominate points in a paint we're going
8:02
to have to be efficient whether they
8:03
play man or Zone and this really gives
8:05
us a blueprint on things that we've done
8:08
well that we continue to reinforce but
8:10
also some things that we need to we need
8:11
to get to work on and so um I'm really
8:14
excited about look working at that and
8:16
looking at what we need to improve last
8:18
one Adam just remind we'll back here on
8:20
Wednesday at 2:30 so and shebert talking
8:23
to Jaylen Withers tonight he said it
8:25
meant something to him to earn the the
8:28
starting nod you know to open the season
8:30
um what have you seen from him of late
8:33
he said maybe you know he has to do it
8:35
through defense to maybe get some more
8:36
playing time what what have you seen
8:38
from him from late that that had him out
8:40
there as a starter tonight well I mean
8:43
you know coming off the bench starting
8:45
that's just that's not something that I
8:47
think about um you know I never thought
8:51
about it as a player and I don't really
8:53
think about it as a coach uh but what um
8:57
Jay wit has done really well early in
8:59
the season is being consistent I I've
9:02
said this you know he's the one he's our
9:05
most athletic most versatile big you
9:07
know from a defensive standpoint he
9:09
could guard one through five offensively
9:11
his ability to be able to attack the
9:13
basket you know and those are things
9:15
that I want him to continue to work on
9:16
he had you know zero free throw attempts
9:18
I think he could live at the free throw
9:19
line the way that he can attack the
9:21
basket and so he's been really good for
9:23
us he's huge and um you know him you
9:28
know obviously the exper expence is Big
9:30
Force been in those situations playing
9:32
at the highest level and so um I've been
9:36
really happy with Jay Wht and how he's
9:38
played thus far thanks everybody thanks
