couple times recently uh well you've
0:02
said it more than recently that you know
0:04
you use stats to kind of validate what
0:05
you see and and what you think about
0:08
what you've seen how much do you use
0:10
analytics how how much do you go back
0:11
and look at some of the stats and has it
0:13
ever kind of tweaked a little bit about
0:15
what you saw and maybe change your your
0:17
take on on how your team
0:20
performed yeah I mean I think there's a
0:22
place for analytics um you know
0:26
obviously I I use numbers and you know
0:29
determining
0:30
you know where we want to be in regards
0:32
to you know rebounding defense taking
0:36
care of the basketball different stuff
0:38
like that how we um how we're compared
0:41
or our rank in regards nationally I
0:44
think those are things that I that I
0:46
look at in those categories from a
0:48
defensive standpoint rebounding and
0:50
taking care of the
0:52
basketball um also look a little bit at
0:54
at at the pace in which we play at um
0:58
but those three things I love look at
1:01
regularly in terms of defensive
1:03
rebounding and taking care of basketball
1:04
and there there are marks that I want
1:06
our team to consistently hit and coming
1:08
out of the trip that you guys were just
1:10
on what are some of those numbers that
1:12
are concerning to you that validate
1:14
maybe what you saw or maybe enhancement
1:17
you saw well the um you know from a
1:20
defensive standpoint
1:22
um uh the six halves in Maui three of
1:26
the six we've allowed teams to shoot
1:29
over % from the field um that's not
1:32
where we want to
1:33
be
1:35
um you know in in the three games in
1:38
Maui teams were
1:40
averaging 90 points per game that's not
1:43
where that's not good for us that's not
1:45
where we want to be uh rebounding the
1:48
basketball in the three games in MA were
1:50
a minus four that's definitely not where
1:52
we need to be um we've got to do a
1:55
better job of getting to the offensive
1:56
class and prior to Maui I think we were
1:59
number one country in terms of fewest
2:02
turnovers and in the three games of M we
2:05
average more turnovers than
2:07
assists
2:09
and a lot of points off turnovers a lot
2:12
of points off turnovers and so you see
2:14
the you know I've been clear and direct
2:16
with the guys those are the three
2:17
categories that I look at every day for
2:20
this team and those are the three
2:22
categories that have to be good for us
2:24
to be good
2:27
and those are three reasons why we
2:30
weren't as successful as we wanted to be
2:34
Maui what go ahead CH I'll get the next
2:38
they say good strong competition early
2:40
in the season can make you a better team
2:42
do you feel like playing these teams
2:43
that even though may not show up in the
2:45
record or making you a better team but
2:48
you mentioned the concerns but
2:50
also well I mean I mean playing these
2:53
type of games whether and I just don't
2:56
specifically Point towards the three
2:59
games in Maui playing on the road at
3:02
Hawaii playing on the road against
3:03
Kansas playing at home against Elon all
3:06
of them um give us a picture on things
3:09
that we're doing well that we want to
3:11
continue to do well and things that we
3:13
need to address and get better at and
3:16
when you're allowed 50 points in a paint
3:19
against Kansas and also against Michigan
3:22
State you know it gives you a clear
3:24
picture of from a defensive standpoint
3:26
things that may need to tweak or change
3:29
or alter or pivot from in order to uh do
3:32
a better job at protecting the pain and
3:34
so yeah I would say those three games
3:37
that the competition the level of
3:39
competition but every game I've I've
3:41
gotten a clear picture of what this team
3:44
can do really well and what what kind of
3:46
things we got to continue to work on
3:48
Heber sort of along those lines one of
3:50
the things that seemed to keep happening
3:52
in Hawaii was Elliot getting in foul
3:55
trouble early um it was in Maui it was
3:57
even the Hawaii game too what are the
4:00
things that you think he needs to learn
4:04
about when to turn on the aggressiveness
4:07
when to dial it back you know some of
4:09
those were the chicken wing type fouls
4:10
like what you know with that specific
4:13
thing that issue with him getting ding
4:16
with the early fouls what does he need
4:17
to do better or improve on in that that
4:20
aspect well I think a lot of you know
4:22
those early fouls you talked about were
4:24
you know self-induced in terms of
4:26
offensive fouls yeah and um
4:30
um putting himself in position to have
4:32
early fouls and and for our rotation to
4:35
be a little bit differently because of
4:37
that um I think in a number of those
4:41
instances especially Hawaii and I can't
4:43
remember the other game you know I put
4:45
him back in with two fouls and I thought
4:47
he did a really good job defensively of
4:49
Defending without fouling and so that's
4:51
something that um not just him but for
4:55
all of us have got to do a better job at
4:58
um I didn't look one thing I didn't look
5:00
at that I do pay attention to is you
5:02
know free throw rate and I felt like you
5:05
know from a defensive standpoint we did
5:07
a we
5:09
did a worse job defending without f with
5:13
fouling out in Maui and that's something
5:16
that's always been a strength for us
5:17
offensively our ability to create fouls
5:19
and be able to get to the free throw
5:21
line I felt like teams did a better job
5:23
of that we got that's something that we
5:25
need to improve on excuse me moving
5:27
forward is it adjustment for ellot how
5:30
physical the opponents have been on him
5:33
during that
5:34
trip well I think the physicality in
5:37
Maui
5:39
was um there was it was more physical it
5:43
just was you know um there were bigger
5:46
guards um physical
5:49
athletic and you know playing at North
5:52
Carolina playing at this level this is
5:54
what you expect and so there's an
5:56
adjustment period in regards to that and
5:58
that's something that
6:00
um something else that we learned from
6:02
is you know just en typ of
6:04
physicality um not only taking it but
6:07
giving it
6:08
back he just not just taking it giving
6:10
it back just to follow up on that real
6:13
quick you know you hear coaches say I'd
6:15
rather have to tell you to to slow down
6:17
than to speed up like I know it's a fine
6:19
line in terms of of Elliott but like do
6:23
you have to have any sort of dialogue
6:25
with him about maybe pulling it back
6:27
every now and then maybe some of those
6:28
loose balls that
6:30
that he's gone for you know he got a
6:31
couple fouls that way yeah like is that
6:33
any sort of conversation you have to
6:35
have need to have no I you know in
6:36
regards to like loose balls like I'm not
6:39
you know effort is effort you know I
6:42
want you diving on loose balls I I I
6:44
want our guys and I say this to them all
6:46
the time I want them to play fast and
6:48
free you know and so
6:52
um the conversations that I have with
6:55
with players in regards to Dad back is
6:58
when it gets out of control but
7:02
um and one of the things that has been
7:04
good for us is playing at Great Pace
7:06
sure and so you know our transition game
7:10
our you know our Pace in which we
7:12
transition from defense offense has been
7:13
really good this year and so I don't
7:15
want to doubt that back but just being
7:17
aware of getting those extra fouls that
7:21
that that could be eliminated that's
7:23
really important to us and I think
7:26
that's something that we learned over
7:27
the last week you touch on a little bit
7:30
defending without fouling what are some
7:32
of the other things you've noticed on
7:33
film defensively and stuff you have to
7:35
teach retach uh hone in on with these
7:37
guys moving forward yeah you know it's
7:39
it's interesting you know when you play
7:41
four games in six days or three games in
7:44
three days you don't really it's not
7:48
really you don't you don't get a chance
7:50
to practice you're you're preparing you
7:52
know and maybe some of the uh discipline
7:56
and details and things that you work on
7:57
in practice
7:59
you don't have time to to talk about
8:02
them reinforce because you prepareing
8:03
for the next game and so defensively we
8:06
got to do a better job guard the ball
8:08
10one whether it's in the post on the
8:10
perimeter we have to do a better job at
8:13
protecting the paint we just we just do
8:15
we have to do a better job at uh
8:17
communicating and talking um I've never
8:20
seen a good defensive team not talk not
8:24
be good
8:25
communicators and this is probably the
8:28
biggest area defensively or one of the
8:30
biggest is uh being able to rebound the
8:33
basketball our defensive rebounding
8:35
percentage is not where it needs to be
8:38
and when the ball is up in the air
8:39
that's where um at times we we we've
8:43
struggled and I've said before it
8:45
doesn't have anything to do with the
8:47
size physically it has and not to say we
8:49
don't have big hearts but we've we got a
8:53
rebound a basketball we just do and we
8:55
got to finish those possessions with the
8:57
rebound and when we do that that allows
8:59
us to get out in transition where we've
9:01
consistently been really good all season
9:03
you mentioned the uh the assisted
9:05
turnover ratio and you know the I guess
9:07
increase in turnovers when you looked at
9:09
those three games specifically in Maui
9:11
what kind of theme maybe Did You observe
9:13
of the turnovers and I guess why they
9:16
were happening at a at a higher rate
9:17
than
9:19
previously I really believe
9:24
that you know our guys are so
9:27
competitive and they want to win that
9:29
you know one thing that we haven't done
9:32
really well is is is play well we've
9:34
been behind a lot in the first halfes
9:37
and so in order to come back you know
9:41
guys want to make a play to get us back
9:44
you know we're down by 14 let's make a
9:46
basket that ties it you know and which
9:48
can't happen and so um maybe doing a
9:53
little bit too much for the for the
9:55
right reasons have resulted in um some
9:59
tour overs and I think we've always been
10:01
a team that's been good to Great very
10:03
unselfish and
10:06
um we've got to get back to that doing
10:09
that and is that kind of the just quick
10:12
followup uh kind of the message you've
10:13
had for them since you guys have gotten
10:15
back of you know let's not try to do too
10:17
much let's just kind of you know move it
10:18
around things like that like is that
10:19
kind of what you've been communicating
10:21
to him last last week I have you know I
10:23
just you know we we we've talked about a
10:26
number of things you know as I said you
10:27
know from from an offense standpoint uh
10:30
limiting our turnovers making the easy
10:32
play and getting back to taking care of
10:34
the basketball we've talked about
10:35
offensive rebounding like we've got to
10:37
get to three four five um to the
10:40
offensive glass our re offensive
10:41
rebounding numbers are nowhere near
10:43
where I want it to be in terms of our
10:46
execution um better screening better
10:49
execution of our sets and being in the
10:51
right spots and being able um to execute
10:55
properly and then I've talked
10:57
defensively we got a rebound the
10:58
basketball we got uh we've got to do a
11:01
better job at uh shutting down the paint
11:04
and um uh we've got to do a better job
11:08
at communicating and talking so those
11:10
are things that since we've gotten back
11:13
uh that we've talked about pretty much
11:14
every day and it's something that I'll
11:15
talk about today in practice as well
11:17
what lessons can you guys take from last
11:19
year's Alabama game that can apply to
11:22
this one obviously the teams are
11:23
different some of the characters are the
11:24
same but is there anything you can take
11:25
from that one apply to this one no I
11:27
don't think there's anything from you
11:29
know last year's game against Alabama
11:32
obviously they're very talented and they
11:35
have a a system and a way that they play
11:38
um you know the way that they transition
11:40
from defense to offense is real um you
11:43
know tremendous length and athleticism
11:45
and so um we'll have our hands full on
11:48
Wednesday we're just really excited
11:49
about the opportunity one being back at
11:51
home now playing on our home floor but
11:54
also having an opportunity to compete
11:57
against a really good Alabama team how
11:59
about how about your style like this
12:00
year's team does seem faster even more
12:03
so than your previous ones a transition
12:05
game does that make you better equipped
12:07
to play against that
12:10
style um I wouldn't say it's a better
12:12
equipped to play at that style I mean we
12:14
were up three with a minute 30 to go in
12:17
the sweet 16 so I thought you know
12:19
that's a pretty good spot to be in we
12:20
just you know didn't make the plays down
12:23
stretch to be able to to pull out the
12:25
game but um you know we've got to do a
12:28
great job rebounding against them they
12:30
you know they go to the offensive class
12:32
and I talked about their length and
12:33
athleticism so that's just going to have
12:35
to be um that's an area that we're going
12:38
to have to be really good at and then
12:40
also taking care of the basketball
12:41
because you mentioned they're just as
12:43
fast as well and they can they can
12:45
convert turnovers into points um better
12:49
than most people in the country so it'll
12:52
be it'll be fun game to play two more
12:54
youber you mentioned the first half
12:55
deficits you guys have faced early on
12:57
this year have you thought about poti
12:59
making a change in in the lineup to
13:01
start the game I've thought about
13:03
everything you know I've I've you know
13:06
it's a great question you know I I I
13:08
have I've thought about everything in
13:10
regards to what is leading us to being
13:13
in those deficits in the in the first
13:15
half is it rotations is it different
13:19
start lineup is it combinations is it
13:23
cuz we were in Maui or you know I I
13:25
don't know um those are definite things
13:28
that I'm I'm looking looking at and if
13:31
there's something that needs to be
13:33
changed or adjusted I will to put us in
13:36
a better position to get off the better
13:38
starts uh in regards to not having a
13:41
come back in the second half and um just
13:45
got to do better at that the Au
13:48
regarding the slow starts and also a
13:50
stretch late in the Auburn game when
13:52
think it was a 10 to four minute Mark
13:54
you guys didn't attempt to three but you
13:55
were down between like 11 and 15 and
13:57
then when you fall behind early do you
13:59
think you're getting enough looks are
14:00
the guys maybe operating in a manner
14:03
where they're getting the open looks or
14:05
they're looking for the open looks
14:06
because you say they're trying to maybe
14:07
do too much are they losing sight of
14:09
some of the other options that are out
14:10
there I don't know it's losing sight I
14:12
think you know you know we got 15 guys
14:15
on the team and 10 of them are
14:17
new and I
14:20
think this team is trying to find their
14:24
Rhythm you know we're that's why we
14:27
spend so much time together off the
14:29
court that's why we practice every day
14:31
in order to blend each and everyone's
14:34
games together to fit together out there
14:37
on the floor and so you know early in
14:39
the season it's always an adjustment
14:41
period in terms of regards to you know
14:44
play style roles and as I said before
14:47
there are no roles I'm not a role type
14:50
of Coach I whatever is in your bag
14:51
that's what I want you to bring every
14:53
day to the game and um I think every day
14:57
we're getting better better and more
14:59
familiar with each other out there on
15:01
the floor and sometimes it takes a
15:03
little bit of time as a quick followup
15:05
to that when you're behind does it
15:07
challenge that lack of familiarity a
15:08
little bit
15:10
more um I don't know if it challenges it
15:13
um but it's a position that I don't
15:15
think is sustainable and I don't want to
15:17
be in you know coming
15:20
back 18 14 having a come back against
15:24
Dayton having a come back against
15:26
Michigan State uh Kansas is that's
15:29
that's just not sustainable um it's nice
15:32
to see that we have it in us to be able
15:35
to come back um but it's a position that
15:38
I don't think is sustainable I think the
15:40
position that we want to be at is is to
15:42
be consistent on both halves and and it
15:45
really starts defensively when you talk
15:46
about being behind and I said that three
15:49
of the six quarters that we played in
15:52
Maui we allowed over 50% from the field
15:55
and i' I've said this to you guys and I
15:56
say it to the team it all starts with
15:58
defense
15:59
um the success of this team is going to
16:01
be tied to how good a defensive team we
16:03
become and how good um a rebounding team
16:06
we become it just it's plain and simple
16:09
it's right
16:10
there thanks
