just kind of like what's it been like to
0:02
be under you know BC coach Belch and
0:04
Coach Bri.
0:05
Yeah, with long snapping I take a huge
0:07
pride in it because it's a really unseen
0:09
part of the game. Usually when a punt
0:11
comes on and Tom can attest, everybody
0:12
is usually going to get the concessions.
0:15
Um they're on their phone. No one's
0:17
paying attention to it. But for us, it's
0:19
a huge part of our game because that's
0:20
all we do. And so I put a lot of passion
0:23
into what I do in perfecting what my
0:25
craft is, whether it's snapping,
0:26
blocking, and uh having Tom as the
0:29
punter, it's been great because we work
0:31
with each other to figure out what's
0:32
good um for each other, where he wants
0:34
the ball, um you know, where he's
0:35
standing, where I need to snap it for
0:36
him. So I take a lot of pride in long
0:39
snapping as a whole.
0:41
Let's go to Jeremiah.
0:42
Yeah. Um I I wanted to ask you when did
0:46
long snapping from your vantage point
0:48
become your things? I know you all that
0:50
in high school, things like that. When
0:52
did it become this is going to be my
0:54
craft. This is what's going to, you
0:55
know, happen.
0:56
So, I originally picked it up in sixth
0:58
grade. Um, my brother was a kicker and
1:00
whenever him and my dad went out to the
1:02
field to work on it, being the little
1:03
brother, I'm like, I'm going too. Uh,
1:05
originally tried kicking, figured out
1:06
I'm not good at that. So, I learned how
1:09
to snap and I really started taking it
1:11
seriously about sophomore year, junior
1:13
year of high school. um when going to
1:15
camps, I figured out I'm really good and
1:17
can compete with other guys across the
1:18
country. And as I got into college and
1:20
worked on my own craft, I, you know,
1:22
started to get better and better and
1:23
really took pride in what I do.
1:25
Real quick follow to that, you said miss
1:27
you and what made you want to get into
1:29
the cooking?
1:30
Just just that thing of being the little
1:31
brother. You always want to do what your
1:32
older brother does. And you know, I
1:34
always looked up to my older brother
1:36
growing up. He was the smart one in the
1:37
family. Um the athlete, he ran cross
1:40
country and did soccer. So I was like,
1:41
you know what? I'm I'm going to give it
1:42
a try. and then shortly figured out it
1:44
was not for me.
1:46
Let's go to Brian.
1:48
Um, two two quick.
1:50
Are you on scholarship? I know you know
1:52
it's tough sometimes the specialist to
1:54
get on scholarship. And then secondly,
1:55
coach Bell talked about changing some of
1:57
the ways that you're blocking. Wondering
1:59
if you could go into detail about what
2:01
you worked on with that.
2:02
Yeah, so the first one I am on
2:03
scholarship. I got put on at the
2:04
beginning of the year and uh with
2:06
changing things up. I was originally
2:08
supposed to be a free release guy, snap
2:09
it and run. But then they realized I
2:11
could be a very uh lethal weapon in the
2:13
protection game and I take a lot of
2:15
pride in that because they see um I can
2:17
be of use in protection and so I put a
2:20
chip on my shoulder and trying to learn
2:22
and be as good as possible with that.
2:24
And I think through spring, you know,
2:25
summer into the um preseason training,
2:28
I've gotten really good at it. And you
2:30
know, they challenged me a lot in
2:31
practice to give me some tough looks to
2:32
make sure I'm prepared on Saturdays. And
2:34
I think it's um kind of been a test of
2:36
how good I am. They're trying to
2:37
challenge me more and more. And so it's
2:39
only going to make me better for
2:40
Saturdays and make Saturdays easy. So I
2:41
I love blocking honestly.
2:43
Tougher to block or go down there or try
2:44
to make an attack?
2:45
Uh tougher to block in terms of giving
2:47
me stuff that maybe team other teams
2:49
might not give or putting like a very
2:51
quick guy in there to try and get past
2:53
me. Just making it harder on me in
2:55
practice so that when games come it's a
2:57
lot easier to do.
2:58
Let's go to Adam.
3:00
Adam Smith in South Carolina. Spencer,
3:02
uh, you've been around here a while. I
3:04
think this is your sixth year.
3:05
Yeah.
3:06
U, it's kind of a multi-layered question
3:08
if you can bear with me. What made you
3:10
want to keep coming back cuz you could
3:12
go on and do something else? I'm sure
3:15
you were in early on Mac 2.0. I mean, it
3:18
was 2020 when you got here. How have you
3:20
seen maybe this program change over the
3:24
years, especially with the switch from
3:27
Mac to Bellich? Not trying to throw
3:28
anybody under the bus. and maybe how
3:30
have you seen the perception of football
3:33
change around here just just through
3:35
your eyes on sort of the ground level.
3:37
So in that first part what kept me
3:39
coming back is really more so the
3:41
academic side of the school. Um as
3:43
everyone knows it's a very prestigious
3:44
university and um sometimes that title
3:47
on the degree is very enticing to
3:48
employers and everyone knows football
3:50
isn't for long. Even in the NFL it
3:52
stands for not for long. So when
3:54
whenever my football career comes to an
3:56
end, which who knows hopefully it's far
3:58
from far from now, uh I want to put
4:00
myself in the best position possible to
4:02
be successful after football in whatever
4:04
career I choose. And going back to from
4:07
one staff to another. Um this staff
4:11
definitely puts a lot more
4:13
responsibilities on us. They're treating
4:14
us like pros and they're expecting us to
4:16
handle ourselves like pros. So, they're
4:19
encouraging us to always do, you know,
4:20
scouting reports on our own, figure out
4:22
what our potential matchups are going to
4:23
be for the week. Um, kind of get an idea
4:26
of what we're going to see and move into
4:28
practice kind of with that information
4:30
and try and prepare the best way. And
4:32
it's honestly been a lot more beneficial
4:34
because in the past it really wasn't
4:36
encouraged as much and now it's kind of
4:38
like this is what pros are going to do.
4:40
So, if you want to get to that level,
4:42
you got to get used to it now. And
4:43
that's what I really like about having
4:45
coach Bichc and the new staff in
4:46
especially with coach Briefer. He's the
4:48
same way. He wants us to know who we're
4:50
going up against, what their tendencies
4:51
might be, and try and figure out what
4:52
can we can do in practice to best
4:54
prepare for it.
4:55
So maybe more, just follow, sorry, maybe
4:57
more homework from the end of the game
5:00
to the start of practice next week, that
5:03
type of thing. Like you need to be
5:04
prepared whereas they're not screen
5:06
feeding it to you, that type of thing.
5:08
Yeah, exactly. And I think for me
5:10
personally, I always like to they'll
5:12
always the coaches always break down
5:13
games and like tell you what they think
5:15
you did good or what you didn't. But I
5:17
like to take it personally to do it on
5:19
my own, you know, self-critique myself.
5:21
And I'm I'm very hard on myself. Um my I
5:24
think my room for error personally is
5:26
very small whereas someone else could
5:28
see a snap and like, "Oh, that was
5:29
good." But me, I'm like, "It wasn't
5:31
good. It definitely could have been
5:32
better." So, um that's something me
5:34
personally I like to do to make sure I'm
5:36
the best on the field so I can give my
5:37
teammates the best, give the coaches the
5:39
best, and hopefully give the team a good
5:41
opportunity to win the game.
5:43
No. No. Was off tail 24/7. I'm curious,
5:46
what's the story behind you getting on
5:48
scholarship? Was it like a fun like how
5:49
did you find out? I guess
5:51
uh I mean it was one of those things
5:53
they were like they kind of just told
5:55
me. I was like cool.
5:57
Like it it's one of those things like
5:59
it's it's great but I it was never
6:02
really that for me. I've always just
6:03
wanted the opportunity to play and both
6:05
coaching staffs with M. Brown and Bill
6:07
Bichc they've given me that opportunity.
6:09
So I'm forever grateful for that and the
6:11
you know the scholarship is just an
6:12
added bonus to it. Was it coach they
6:14
told you or was it
6:15
it was it was before the transition?
6:17
Okay.
6:17
But once once they got back in, they're
6:19
like, "Yeah, you're still going to keep
6:20
that." So I was like, "Great."
6:23
Tommy,
6:24
as a long snapper, I mean, who do you
6:25
look up to? Greg Warren played here.
6:27
He's played in the league forever. I
6:29
mean, I don't think that's a guy that
6:30
want to follow this footstep.
6:32
Oh, definitely. Um,
6:34
especially recently looking to like all
6:36
the guys across the leagues. You hear a
6:39
lot of names like Luke Rhodess, JJ
6:40
Jensen, local guy. He's been in the
6:42
league, you know, forever. John Weekes,
6:45
a lot of these veteran guys around the
6:47
league. But, you know, I like to look at
6:49
some guys that are maybe in similar
6:50
positions, similar similar body sizes
6:53
just to kind of compare games to see
6:55
like where I think I could stand
6:57
compared to them. But yeah, definitely
7:00
definitely Jansen being the local guy,
7:02
you know. Um, Manley obviously he's
7:05
considered widely as the greatest to
7:07
ever do it. Jansen's also in that
7:09
conversation weeks as well. Um, looking
7:11
up to those guys, it's like quarterbacks
7:13
looking up to Brady, receivers looking
7:14
up to Moss. That's that's what all the
7:16
guys want to do was trying to have that
7:17
longevity that those guys had.
7:19
Let's go to Shelby.
7:21
Uh, Shelton, the News Observer, I'm
7:23
curious if and I was just talking about
7:27
you've seen the Bill Bich 10 minute long
7:30
answer about the history of long
7:32
snappers and if so, just what were your
7:34
thoughts on that? Yeah, I think every
7:36
long snapper in the country has seen
7:37
that video because when the greatest
7:40
coach of all time goes that long about
7:42
talking about long snappers, they're
7:44
they're pretty tuned to listening to it.
7:47
But yeah, it's it's really cool how much
7:49
he cares about it and how much he
7:50
actually knows about it. We had a
7:51
conversation uh before one practice that
7:53
felt like 10 minutes just talking about,
7:56
you know, stuff I could do, stuff I
7:57
could add to my game, stuff that could,
7:59
you know, help the whole scheme out. And
8:01
it's it's really cool when you have a
8:02
coach who knows that much because you
8:04
you'll talk to like other head coaches
8:05
and like, "Oh, yep. Good snap. We'll
8:06
we'll move on." Bill will be like,
8:08
"Yeah, that was a good snap. Blocking
8:10
was good. Did you see this? What else
8:12
did you see?" If you see this, talk to
8:13
your teammates, you know, help help them
8:15
figure it out, you know? And it's it's
8:17
just awesome cuz having a coach like him
8:19
and especially like coach Briefer, guys
8:20
that have so much experience working
8:22
with, you know, the best to ever do it
8:24
in the NFL, it kind of encourages you to
8:26
like work harder and try and be the best
8:28
and perfect your craft. So it's it's
8:30
been really awesome.
8:31
A quick follow up. I mean assuming that
8:34
you and you know a lot of your teammates
8:36
when the news came that was being hired
8:39
you know excited about this is one of if
8:41
not the greatest coach alive but was it
8:43
a different maybe feeling for you as oh
8:45
I know this guy really cares about what
8:47
special teams in all?
8:49
Yeah. Much like everyone else it was it
8:50
was definitely a big shock when it
8:52
happened. But as I as I let it grow on
8:55
me, I was like, you know what? Having
8:57
having someone who cares about special
8:58
teams is gonna be awesome because when
9:00
you have coaches that care so much about
9:02
special teams, it's it's fun to play
9:04
for. You have guys coming up to them all
9:06
the time being like, I want to I want to
9:07
play. I've had some teammates come up to
9:09
me like, hey, can you talk to coach
9:10
about putting me on, you know, one of
9:12
these teams or one of the the scout
9:13
teams because, you know, I just want to
9:14
play special teams. I'm like, yeah, of
9:16
course. Like, that's what you want in
9:17
any program. guys who are so eager and
9:20
just want to play that they'll they're
9:21
going to go to special teams because you
9:22
have one of the best coaches who know
9:24
special teams values it and he's even
9:26
shown so many clips of um guys who have
9:29
been in the league solely on special
9:31
teams and made double digit year careers
9:32
out of it. So it's been really awesome
9:34
for team morale just bringing everyone
9:36
together and wanting to like be on
9:37
special teams.
9:39
Anything else with Spencer?
9:41
I guess they get like more guys coming
9:44
up to you on special teams. Would you
9:45
say that's different like from years
9:47
past than a number of coaches?
9:48
Oh, definitely. I mean, from years past,
9:50
you'd have some guys who just like like
9:52
most people, they were like, I don't
9:53
really care. I want to play my position.
9:55
I came here to my play my position. I
9:56
don't want to be right guard on the punt
9:58
team or or the L1 on kickoff. You know,
10:01
guys just want to play their position.
10:02
But now guys are like, oh, playing for
10:05
this guy. Like, that's that's a plus in
10:06
my book.
10:08
That was Mcen's fault in the drop
10:09
against TCU. Not
10:12
no comment.
10:12
Okay.
10:14
Good stuff, Spencer. Appreciate
