UNC gets another shot at No. 1 Gamecocks after playing them close in first matchup

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Teams have taken their shots at No. 1 South Carolina all season, but nobody has pulled off the upset. Only three teams have come within seven points of the 33–0 and top-seeded Gamecocks: reigning national champion LSU, Tennessee and the team they face in the second round of the NCAA women’s tournament at 1 p.m. Sunday (CBS) — No. 8-seed North Carolina.

UNC women give up late lead but show poise at end, advance

COLUMBIA, S.C. — You want to be playing your best basketball in March, and No. 8 seed North Carolina arguably produced that for one half of Friday’s game. The Tar Heels’ season-long trend of blowing big leads nearly bit them again.
But UNC delivered the early punches and lockdown defense throughout to take down No. 9 seed Michigan State 59–56 in the first round of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament at Colonial Life Arena.

Withers’ energy, RJ Davis’ second-half push help UNC roll

CHARLOTTE — No. 5 Carolina’s expected domination inside gave the Tar Heels a big edge, and Jae’Lyn Withers’s energy off the bench was a big catalyst in making that happen. But, as with many games this season, RJ Davis’ second-half push put the game away as UNC overcame what Coach Hubert Davis said was “out-of-character” play before halftime.
