Tar Heels in NBA: White has big night, pushes Bulls to win in fourth quarter; Anthony hits 18

By R.L. Bynum

On a night when Chicago guard Zach LaVine was struggling, Coby White was there to deliver a big game in a Bulls victory on Friday night.

White scored 22 points in 29 minutes and ignited a 15–2 fourth-quarter run for a 134–122 home victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves and back-to-back wins. His 3-pointer during that run gave Chicago the lead for good.

White, who scored 12 fourth-quarter points, tied his season-high with six 3-pointers and pulled down six rebounds. He also had six 3-pointers on Dec. 31 against Indiana and has 10 games with at least four.

The Bulls are 35–21, tied for second in the Eastern Conference with Cleveland, one game back of the Miami Heat.

LaVine scored 12 points, half of his average, and was 1 of 6 from 3-point range.

White said that the team’s togetherness made the difference.

“When one has not got it going, others got to step up to the plate,” White said. “Everybody stepped up big tonight on both ends of the court, especially in that second half. We came out with the win, the most important thing.”

Rookie guard Ayo Dosunmu returned after missing one game with a concussion, so White came off the bench after starting the previous game. His 17.5 game score was his fifth-best this season and his ninth of at least 15 this season.

White had an amazing play late in the first quarter after he had missed a 3-point attempt (below).

Tony Bradley had two points and two blocks in 13 minutes.

Cole Anthony collected 18 points, six rebounds and five assists but a career-high seven turnovers in the Orlando Magic’s 114–99 loss at Utah, the Jazz’s fifth consecutive win.

Danny Green had three points, three rebounds and two assists in 19 minutes of Philadelphia’s 100–87 home win over Oklahoma City.

Theo Pinson played for the Mavericks’ G League team, the Texas Legends, in their 127–111 home loss to the Agua Caliente Clippers. He started and contributed five points, four rebounds and five assists.

Justin Jackson, released by Phoenix after the expiration of his 10-day contract, wasn’t active for the game for Texas.
