UNC slips in NET rankings, but now get another Quad 1 game, two games up to Quad 2

By R.L. Bynum

North Carolina’s NET ranking slipped a spot to 14th, but the good play of future opponents has given the Tar Heels more chances to improve their NCAA tournament resume.

UNC (8–1), 13th in the NET two days ago, slipped a spot after its 81–61 Quad 3 home victory Sunday night against Georgetown.

But the Tar Heels now get a Quad 1 opportunity in Atlanta on Dec. 20 at the CBS Sports Classic against Ohio State, giving them 10 remaining games on the schedule that are currently classified as Quad 1.

The Buckeyes (7–1) now have a NET ranking of 44 after Saturday’s 86–82 victory at Northwestern, upgrading a game that was Quad 2.

The NCAA tournament committee uses the NET rankings as one of its metrics to determine who makes the field and how to seed teams. NET rankings will fluctuate throughout the season, and the only quad designation that matters is where your opponents stand on Selection Sunday, not where they ranked when the game was played.

Quadrant 1 (UNC is 5–4; 6 games left): Home games against teams with a NET ranking of 30 or better, neutral-site games against teams ranked 50 or better, and road games against teams ranked 75 or better
Quadrant 2 (UNC is 20; 1 game left): Home 31–75, neutral 51–100, road 76–135
Quadrant 3 (UNC is 7–0; 1 game left): Home 76–160, neutral 101–200, road 135–240
Quadrant 4 (UNC is 5–0; no games left): Home 161 or lower, neutral 201 or lower, road 241 or lower

Two ACC games that were classified as Quad 3 games are now Quad 2:

—Wake Forest’s NET ranking is up to 64 after Saturday’s 75–66 victory at West Virginia to move its record to 7–3
—Notre Dame (7–3) is up to 69th after two consecutive road victories: 76–71 Tuesday against Missouri and 87–85 in overtime Friday against TCU.

Before the clash with the Buckeyes, UNC gets a Quad 4 home game at 2 p.m. Saturday (The CW) against USC Upstate (6–5) and a Quad 3 home game on Dec. 16 against East Tennessee State (8–2).
