Davis, Vazquez take top honors at Rammys

Carolina honored the best athletes and performances of the last year at the annual Rammys on Monday night. The top male and female athletes were no surprise, as All-American guard R.J. Davis and four-time NCAA championship diver Aranza Vazquez took home the top honors.

Two individual national champions — wrestler Austin O’Connor and diver Aranza Vazquez — earned Athlete of the Year honors at the Rammy Awards on Monday night at Memorial Hall. The awards program recognizes excellence in Carolina athletics over the previous year. Women’s basketball center Malu Tshitenge of women’s basketball and football defensive lineman Kaimon Rucker were the hosts for the event, which was back at Memorial Hall for the first time since 2019.

CHAPEL HILL — No. 11 Carolina battled from behind all afternoon and showed resilience, but only led for 55 seconds late in the game before quickly giving up two huge goals. Denver scored twice in the last 2:29 to take a gritty 9–8 men’s lacrosse victory over the Tar Heels on a sunny day at Dorrance Field, despite four goals from graduate transfer Sean Goldsmith.

UNC, boasting lots of new talent after losing Gray, rolls in men’s lacrosse opener

CHAPEL HILL — It’s a season of change for Carolina men’s lacrosse that the Tar Heels hope will produce more success after missing the NCAA tournament last year. Gone is attackman Chris Gray, the all-time NCAA points leader, but there’s still plenty of optimism. Six transfers with 219 combined career games — all playing their fifth college seasons — have injected plenty of experienced talent to mix with 15 freshmen.
