With Tommy Lloyd off the board in North Carolina’s coaching search, attention likely fully turns to Michigan’s Dusty May and Chicago Bulls coach Billy Donovan.
While Lloyd was clear during his Friday press conference at the Final Four that he would stay at Arizona, May continued to avoid the question but hasn’t dismissed the rumors that he may be a candidate for the UNC job.
“After last year, I decided that I’ll never, ever respond to any job speculation,” May said, remembering a comment he made a year ago when Indiana, his alma matter, was as looking for a coach.
“I had already agreed to terms with Michigan, was 100% done, and I made the comment that I was flattered about a certain job opening because of my background, and that was misconstrued,” May said. “And so I just decided I’m never going to comment on any job that I don’t have.”
May said that he was happy at Michigan, where his second season is culminating at the Final Four.
“I think it’s well-documented how happy I am at Michigan,” he said. “Obviously, my private life, my personal life, my family, their happiness is very important. So, yeah, I love it at Michigan, but you’ll never hear me comment on any other job, unless Michigan lets me go, and I’ll comment on every job.”
The No. 3 Wolverines (35–3) face No. 2 Arizona (36–2) in the second national semifinal in Indianapolis at 8:49 p.m. Saturday (TBS, TNT).
