Mali center Keita commits to UNC

By R.L. Bynum

Sayon Keita, a 7–0, 215-pound center from Mali committed to North Carolina on Tuesday, according to multiple reports.

The pledge by the center, who has been part of the FC Barcelona system since 2023 comes one day after the Tar Heels got a commitment from former Northwestern 7–0 center Cade Bennerman.

Keita was in the Class of 2027, and is reclassifying.

Keita’s appeal is his combination of length, mobility and reputation as a shot-blocker. The UNC program connected with him last August, when he made an official visit after he had gone to Kansas, Indiana, Kentucky and Duke, and before he visited UConn.

On Oct. 14 last season, Barcelona head coach Joan Peñarroya started Keita in his EuroLeague debut against Maccabi, a move that the EuroLeague’s summary said: “surprised many.” He only turned 18 in March, and the average age of a EuroLeague player is 29.

“I was super nervous at the start of the game, but after a minute or so, I was already very quiet, just went out there to have fun,” Keita said, contributing four points and two rebounds in nearly 17 minutes of a 92–71 win over Maccabi Rapyd Tel Aviv. “When I was told I was going to be in the starting five, I was a bit out of my mind because I thought I would mess up a bit, but it wasn’t like that; it felt good. I went out there with a good attitude.”

He put up season-highs of nine points and four rebounds on Dec. 19 in a 134–124 victory over Kosner Baskonia Vitoria-Gastei, playing six EuroLeague games last season.

Keita led the U18 FC Barcelona to the NextGen Belgrade tournament title in 2024 with 23 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks in the final against U18 EA7 Emporio Armani Milan. In the NextGen Finals in Berlin, Keita averaged 17.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and two blocks.

According to MARCA, a Spanish national daily sports newspaper, his early evaluation before he joined FC Barcelona was that of a raw talent.

“He had only been playing basketball for two months, and he still lacked technical fundamentals,” said Pere Gallego, director of the Ibaka Foundation, in a quote translated from Spanish. “But his agility on the court for someone his height impressed me, his natural instinct for the block, and the enthusiasm with which he fit into the group.”

His development curve accelerated once Keita arrived in Spain, first with Estudiantes and then with Barcelona, where he signed in the summer of 2023 and began climbing quickly through the club’s junior structure.

Spanish coverage has described Keita’s physical tools, repeatedly emphasizing mobility and defensive activity for a player of his size.

Mundo Deportivo, another nationwide Spanish sports newspaper, called him (translated) “very mobile and quick,” and detailed his energy and defensive work in March 2025 while playing with Duke’s Dame Sarr.

After his senior debut period, Keita said (translated), “I thank the coach for the debut and the confidence. I’m very happy, but we have to keep working and fighting. I don’t have to be afraid, and instead have confidence and calm.”

In MARCA’s longer feature story on Keita, Serge Ibaka said of Keita (translated): “Sayon is a good kid and very respectful. He likes to listen to the coaches and to the more experienced players, and he is hardworking. He has great potential to be a professional for many years if he stays focused on his path and has a vision for himself, which is the key.”

Keita will be one a key piece to the frontcourt on Coach Michael Malone’s first UNC team.

Roster assuming all players with eligibility other than Caleb Wilson, Henri Veesaar and the seven players who entered the transfer portal return, which would put UNC two under the 15-player limit. The class for next season is listed.
