Tough defense, four Burnette FGs carry UNC to win

MINNEAPOLIS — In recent years, Carolina fans have been told that the defense is better, but those promises have never translated into performance on the field. At least for most of the opener, the Tar Heels unit under first-year coordinator Geoff Collins proved their mettle. The unit forced five three-and-outs to help UNC overcome Max Johnson’s injury to earn a 19–17 victory Thursday night at Huntington Bank Stadium behind four second-half Noah Burnette field goals.

Maye, one of eight rookie Tar Heels and 28 UNC alums in camps, takes first NFL snap Thursday

The much-anticipated New England Patriots debut of rookie quarterback Drake Maye will highlight Thursday’s games when the NFL exhibition schedule gets into full swing next weekend. One of eight rookie UNC alums and 28 Tar Heels in camps, Maye will get his first pro snaps in the Patriots’ 7 p.m. home game (WRAZ, NFL Network) against the Carolina Panthers.

UNC’s football coordinators have highest base salaries on campus

North Carolina’s two football coordinators have the top two base salaries of any employee on the UNC campus, according to the UNC Salary Information Database. The database, updated on June 30, shows that Carolina’s defensive coordinator Geoff Collins (top photo) and offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey are the only employees on the Chapel Hill campus earning a base salary of more than $1 million.
