good afternoon thank you all for for being here especially on short notice as

Steve said I can't let the opportunity of so many sports journalists being here

without recognizing our national championship winning women's soccer team

which wants 23rd national championship [Applause]

indeed I also want to thank my colleague Bubba Cunningham I said I've said publicly earlier that the Bubba is among

the most respected and admired athletic directors in the country and the last couple of weeks

have shown once again why that is the case he's conducted himself with an

extraordinary level of professionalism and dedication and I'm I'm honored to

work with him

[Music] [Applause] so it's always a great day to be a tarel

but today is an especially great day to be a tarel we've been playing football in

Carolina since 1888 and I suspect that in those 136

years there are few days that have been as auspicious as this was

one I've said many times that we want to be the best public university in the United States and that means excellence

in everything that we do we're going to have an excellent

college football program we want to compete with the best and we've hired

the best coach I was sent this morning this

excerpt from Caroline as football media guide from

[Music] 1954 it's talking about one of the

assistant coaches step Nicholas bich when Steve joined the Carolina

coaching staff two Springs ago he felt right at home working alongside Bill Edwards who had already come here

Edwards was Steve's coach at Western Reserve and for the past four years Steve had been ass an assistant to

Edwards at vanderbelt he began his career he began his coaching career at Southwestern

Louisiana institute during his Navy V12 training became head coach at Ham

College in Ohio and remained on that job three years before joining Edwards at

vanderbelt Steve Bel established a record for himself as a coach on pass defense at vanderbelt Steve is is

married to the former Janette M of West Palm Beach Florida they have a

2-year-old son William Steven so coach welcome back to

Carolina thank you very much uh Chancellor really appreciate the kind words and um in the immortal words of

Yogi Bara the future ain't what it used to be and we are embarking on an

entirely new football operation and we can't wait to have Coach belich leading

the charge for us over the last four or five years anytime there's been a search anywhere in the country they thought the

first two people you should call are Brad Stevens and Jay Wright so that's who I called first I didn't think either one of them

were interested but then we said all right how big can our list be and who should be on it and we are here today to

celebrate an incredible day for Carolina Athletics and having coach belich join

us at the University we are known as the University of national champions

and we have a Super Bowl champion coach who's here to lead the program with him

today is also Michael Lombardi former general manager in the NFL and the future of College athletics is changing

and we want to be in the Forefront of that coach belich has demonstrated his passion for teaching for coaching and

for lifelong learning and he is an absolute perfect fit for us at this time

in the history of the university in the history of college sports please welcome the new head football coach at the

University of North Carolina coach Bill [Applause]

bellich thank you I believe you have a presentation

for Coach Chancellor also

right and I did get a new sport coach for the

occasion well Chancellor thank you for the um

um sweatshirt but truth of the matter is I already

have

one it's good to have two actually my dad's from

U ony Coast here yeah you tell I like it right a long time we on it

um well um Chancellor buba um thank you um I can't um express my gratitude to

both of you board trustees um for this um amazing opportunity um I've always

always wanted a coach in football uh coach in college football and um it just never really worked out um

had some good years in the NFL so that was okay but um this is really kind of a

dream come true I I grew up in college football with my dad uh it's a coaching Navy for 50 years so as a kid I knew it

was college football and um and so it's great to to come back home to Carolina

uh and um you know back in an environment that I I really grew up in um you know when you're little you know

remember everything obviously I was too young to remember a lot of things from Carolina but

as as I grew up you know you hear the same story over and over and over and over again and

so one story I always heard was Billy's first words were beat

[Applause] Duke so uh full circle but um again very

uh grateful and appreciative uh for the opportunity um this is a great process I I've learned so much about the

university and the support that uh we have for the football program um and

this is you know obviously a great educational um school and and the kids

here are outstanding and uh we want to you know transfer that over to the football field and have an outstanding

football team uh with those student athletes so um you know I'm here to to

um as Bubba said um teach develop uh and build uh program in the way that I

believe in and so grateful to have Michael um you know with me in this process Michael and I worked together

for going all the way back over 30 years and um you know he has a great U

knowledge of of the general manager uh role of if you will in this type of position uh with terms of you know

scouting two sets of players high school players and College portal players as well as um dealing with some version of

it's called salary cap which is um now um you know part of college football so

um all that being said um I look forward to um working you know here uh I talked

to the players a little earlier and you know that was a a great opportunity to to start to get to know them and and

start to build the program um and excited to continue that process um and

also met with Coach kitens will be you know the first member of the staff that we are and um you know I have a ton of

respect for him um um as well as for Mac um you know a lot of respect for mac and

and his his career what he's done uh so um also look forward to you know

connected with him down the road but um excited to be here excited to be in college football uh excited for the

opportunity to to build and develop young student athletes young men and prepare them for um their life either in

the NFL or professionally uh but the lessons they learn uh will be the

professional lessons uh they'll Pros uh in all areas and and that's what we want to develop as well as as well as having

a winning program successful program but we want to develop good good people and good kids and good football players

so Steve thank you coach um forgive me before we go to questions one Omission

allow luminaries in the room right now but only one of you were inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame the last

six months Willi peppers

okay again please if you would uh identify yourself in your affiliation quickly let's let's get through the questions quickly so we can get to as

many people as possible hold your hands right now because I've got seven assigned already we're going to start over here on the right hand side Aaron

beard with the AP I've already done that part go ahead Aaron uh hi coach uh when you were studying college football in

the last year and examining it you know so much more more has come into professionalism in the model whether it's nil portal Revenue sharing coming

up how how many parallels did you see to what the experience you've had at the pros and and do you envision it sort of

being like a mini NFL team in that regard uh yeah thanks Aaron uh I I do

think there are a lot of parallels there's certainly some differences but uh there are some parallels and I think that's the uh reason for the general

structure of uh you know Michael as a general manager myself as a coach and working together uh collaborative like

we have done uh you know in a professional organization so yeah I do think there some parallels there's

differences for sure but yes right next to I'm sorry coach go ahead hey Bill

marks from the athletic uh at what point in this process did you decide or know that you wanted to become the next head

coach here was there a singular moment when that happened and can you elaborate on the investment that North Carolina and your conversations with the

chancellor and Bubba made to make you feel comfortable taking the role um yeah I mean it was uh uh you

know we went through a process but it was great every step of the way was great the sport was tremendous um you

know all the things that I feel are important to have a successful program Bubba and and U Chancellor Roberts

reaffirmed and uh I I think they made you know they've made a great commitment to this program obviously with great

University uh and I'd say along the way as kind of uh things uh got out if you

will uh the amount of support that I got from uh Carolina grads former Carolina

football players um you know people are connected with this University was was really overwhelming um and not that I'm

a social media expert because I'm not but there was an awful lot of you know positive um feedback from uh my face and

stuff like that it was

great ronro left here chip chip Alexander news observer and Raleigh I

just I'm roughly your age so I ask you this respectfully just at 72 why do you want to keep coaching what's in you you

you've proven yourself over and over in your legacy is said why keep coaching well beats

working you know when you love what you do uh and my dad told me this when you love what you do it's not worth uh it's

really it's I love what I do I love coaching I love the interaction with the players I love building a team working

with the assistance game planning the game itself um which you know there's some good ones there some bad ones but

they're all learning experience and and working with you know young kids who with the energy and iasm to want to be

good to want to be uh successful it's uh you know it's great every day to wake up and and come into that

environment thank we got Andrew then Michael thank Coach Andrew Jones T Illustrated a lot of talks been made

about the difference how college football is a lot more like the NFL like what you were talking a few minutes ago with finances what about scheme how much

can you take from the intricacies of the scheme you use with the Patriots to college when you don't have as much time

with the college kids um yeah that's a great question Andrew I think in some respects you have more

time than with college kids not as much meaning time but more practice time uh certainly more opportunities to the

practice in pads and work on fundamentals and things like that so uh you know it's a trade-off but uh you

know in the end uh scheme wise uh I want to be versatile um and and take

advantage of the Personnel that we have and so uh I've always coached that way I don't want to just you know one one run

one front and run four or five plays and that I just don't believe in that I believe in attacking and defense uh in

in uh defending what the offense does well and that takes to some versatility all two two teams aren't the same and I

think you have to play them differently from week to week so U that's what we'll do and and we'll use our Personnel the best we can to do that but uh we'll have

a a versatile and a system that will incorporate any good player um if we

have a good player I've never said I've never told Michael hey that's a good player we can't use them give us a good

player and and our scheme will we'll find a way to work that player in the sche Michael then Adam over on the left

coach hey that coach Michael Co with wchl and Chapel grow.com here in Chapel Hill you mentioned that you talked to

the current players already have you had conversations with some UNC football alums guys like Julius and other players

in the past and what have those conversations if you have had them been like uh yes I've had uh conversations

with uh you know jlt many the greatest players that have played here um very supportive uh you know Dr Michael the

other day very supportive uh there's been a ton of support uh from ex players and and you know other UNCC almps this

is a great uh great brand and and a great support system here so I'm excited to just spend more time uh with these

people and and and get the support that they've um uh I W say promised but that

they you know U indicated that that they how much they want to be a part of the

program and and how much I want to part of it thank you Adam right here on the end come second then Brian Adam Smith

within South Carolina uh what were your impressions of UNC as a football program

from the outside when you were in the NFL for so many years sounds like when you would come back here to scout

occasionally the place made you know an impression on you well come back here Scout is uh you

know as a coach kind of get where you you know go where you want to go right and maybe you send your assistance to um

you know somewhere else you you take the trip to Carolina

you take some of the other better trips but uh you know Michael and I may made trips down here to the Scout players um

but you know I'd say the overall impression a great place to go to school great you know great program but um you

know it's it's been a while you know 1980 you know that was the AA really and we got Taylor right after that at the

Giants uh and talk so much about you know tar Hills and and their great program and and kind of hasn't been to

that point since so um you know I think there's there's a lot of Pride and and in this program and you know I want to

do everything I can here to to help you know take it to the highest level about five in this section uh Brian then Marty

right in front of him Brian go ahead hey coach Brian Murphy with wrl um two two if you don't mind how do you envision

filling out your staff do you think it'll be former NFL coaches will it be current college coaches and what about

your son and then for Bubba and and Chancellor did take some time for you to get comfortable with the idea of hiring

a coach with no college experience uh one who's a little bit older um and and how did that process sort of play out

how did you become comfortable with that coach you first please um you know on the staff we'll hire the

best coaches we can hire um I want to do everything I can to help this program and make it as strong as possible so uh

we'll hire the best ones we can get uh there are several college coaches that are involved in bowl games and and so

forth um so I wouldn't uh interfere with with the with the process at those you

know those schools with the with their commitments to their team so um you know

we'll see how it goes but it look in the end um I I've already had you know a lot

of people contact me um there'll certainly be a strong presence of NFL people on the staff I I think that's a

certainty and and nly in the staff and in the training area but um at the same time uh I'm looking for the best people

we can get for Carolina and uh that fit I think is a little different than what an NFL team would have but we'll see

Chancellor you want to go first I kind of got over the hump um on the Collegiate head coaching experience with

Damon n house and Aaron [Applause]

mson didn't know if the chancellor wanted to weigh in on that Marty go ahead coach good afternoon

Marty Smith from ESPN when a guy like you with that resume walks in the door here

expectation skyrockets I I wonder how you'll define success at the University

of North Carolina we've seen that guys can flip programs quickly in the portal era so what is success to you

here yeah well success is uh you know it's a day-by-day process and I don't think we can really do anything about us

you know today tomorrow um you know it's immediately in front of us so take advantage of every opportunity we have

to build the team improve the team um get better and keep string a lot of good days together and and the results will

come Pat Walter uh Pat Walter wrl Bill what do

you say to people that fear that if you do succeed here that you might leave for the NFL again in a year or two yeah I

didn't come here to

leave AR chy chansy Newton

Massachusetts um evaluation of the roster and roster turnover is very important besides talking to the players

individually and watching film what other ways are you to evaluate this current roster to see what kind of

additions you might need through the portal and other measurements is you can't work them out on the field before

spring practice right well well but they're working out there now getting ready for Bing so they're practicing on

a daily basis and um you know I'm in very close contact with coach kitens and you know Michael and I are here now so

we'll start the process and take advantage of all opportunities we get so some of those are in person some of

those are in training some of those are on film um and so forth you know some players are injured and those are you

know would be able to be evaluated now but there are other ways to to look at them what they did in the past and try

to project what their future is thank you skip [Music]

for Skip and Jeremiah for the coach skip Foreman with the news and record of

Greensboro and the wion Salem journal on my face and some of the other places

there are people who are still a little leery of your hiring and concerned about

where the program is going and where you're going to take it while you're concerned about football

there's always public criticism and where do you what do you want to tell those

people I'm here do the best I can for the University of North Carina Carolina in the program that's one the deal the

best I have every day so right here Jeremiah you Jeremiah

holay with inside Carolina Bill uh one thing that you mentioned was you're looking forward to teaching and

developing you know a lot of the you know the younger players here at UNC obviously when you were uh in the

professional realm you know players you know a little older got families things like that what do you kind of Envision

and what excites you about the differences of working with you know kind of those younger 19 20 year olds as

compared to you know working with some of the you know older guys like you did in the N right well again in the NFL was a you

know combination of a lot of things but if you look at the Players we had in the NFL um Tom Brady was a fourth string

quarterback as a rookie year and he exactly come in as you know with any play time at all um you know gron Kowski

he you know didn't do too much his rookie year Julian edin um played quarterback in college um then he was a

wide receiver then he was a pun so uh developing players is you know something that Michael and I believe strongly in

and we'll support that with the staff and we'll support that with the program uh there's a lot of opportunity and room

for growth um for all players um whether 1920 or honestly 22 23 now look there's

a certain point in their NFL career where um you know they kind of level off and maybe little you know maintain that

is really where they're at but there's so much growth um in players and and again I just think there's a little more

time to do it here at the college level and excited about that opportunity so you know if I've already

called on you asked one I'm not going to come back to you until I've gotten everybody through so you can save your arms on um Mitchell or I'm sorry Joey

then Mitchell coach Joey inside Carolina I think there's some similarities

between today's modern era with players and recruiting as to obviously what you've seen in the NFL what do you see

similar about that and the recruiting process versus just all an out andout free agency that you had in you were uh

in the leag uh well I think there's a number of differences I mean the the free agency

in college if you will is is annually uh in the NFL players were generally speaking with a team for four years

until they were eligible for four years uh for free agency they could be released before that so you know that

would be one difference there's actually more movement in college football um you know there's more structure in the NFL

in terms of uh agents salary cap um you know standardized contracts things like

that with the nil and the revenue share it's just just structured a little bit differently um so yeah and some I don't

say technical things but some uh logistical things like that are different um but you know all manageable

and every other college team is doing the same thing that we are so except for Army Navy and Air Force but they're uh

you know it's that is what it is so um I think to Bubba's Point like trying to to be ahead of the uh ahead of the game

ahead of the curve ahead of the process and that's what we're always going to try to do

give the Tommy right or Mitchell I'm sorry Mitchell then Tommy second row yeah Mitch nor on North Carolina public

radio uh for Chancellor Roberts and Bubba um during this process because of all the changes that everybody has

mentioned with college football and the changes to come with the house settlement was it important for yall to

pursue someone who has the extensive Pro experience that that coach

does certain was a factor in it and uh we looked at a wide variety of people

and obviously when it became realistic that he was available and uh it

certainly was a path that we really wanted to go down and explore and we're just really fortunate to be here today and he's willing to say yes and uh to

lend his expertise and knowledge to uh to Carolina so very excited about

it Tommy second row coach Tommy Ashley with inside Carolina you've been in the

game a long time how how much have you seen the game itself change and how much

have you sort of changed over the years years you've been involved in the game and now you bring it to the college

level uh well yeah of course the game changed a lot um you know really in

every area wherever you want to look whether it's the size of the players the equipment the technology but I mean in

the end uh you got you know 120 yards 100 yard field um and this comes down to

blocking tackling ball security uh fundamental execution I mean all those things are still important regardless of

whether you're in uh 12 Personnel or 11 personnel whether you're in nickel or base defense there's still a lot of

fundamentals and and that's really the basics and uh players like Julius and and LT you know guys like that that are

good fundamental players and great player great athletes as well when you put all that together that's where you

get the Excellence and uh it's not just about athletic Talent it is about athletic talent but it's also about you

know fundamentals execution and technique third row rod rod Bagley fav

Observer bill you talked a lot about your dad's influence on you and and watching him at at Navy and breaking

down film with him what are some of those lessons you still carry with you and and what do you remember from those

experiences that you keep looking back to well what I remember from being my dad was when we would go Scout a game uh

you had one look at every play that's a there was no replay board there was no TVs in the Press Box there was you had

one look at it and he had his pad and and he had his you know the what he worked off of and matter whether it was

a kickoff return that he was diagramming a blitz that he was diagramming or a running play or a pass play um he had to

get the whole play and you had one look and that's it and you got hope the guy in front of you didn't stand up during the play um but he taught me how to

watch football how to watch the the key things how he learned how he trained his eyes to go from one part of the play to

another part of the play based on what the initial lead was uh as a scout and um so those things were very valuable

you know now there's more technology on the sideline you honestly don't have to do it as well but that's how I learn and

that's what a coach does on in practice and you you know you basically get one look at the play you're out there in practice and uh you want to see as much

as you can and then make the corrections and identify whatever needs to be adjusted or or corrected on the play uh

to the best of your ability and um that's always been very helpful to me is to be able to you know see uh what

multiple people are doing at the same time and and try to identify what you know what to be what the correct of

player on or what coaching point to give them to help them do it better so that's my job is help the players and all those

lessons were very helpful to me um and i' say in addition to that the big thing for him was you know make sure you get

the big things right I mean every detail is important of course but um spend too much time on the details and miss the

big picture blocking tackling ball security uh penalties Etc important

things like that and um the time had spent on some little detail doesn't pay

off as much when you when you're not doing the big things right make sure you get those right folks I'm going to swing over to this

side one not chancellor has to step out at 2:40 uh to get to another meeting we'll continue on a little bit after

that but if you got something for the chancellor kind of let me know that uh right here at the front left BR

Freelander and then TVD in the second round Brett freedlander Saturday down south coach how Hands-On do you plan to

be in recruiting and how much do you you plan on delegating to your staff in that respect and also do you have a long-term

plan as to how long you want to or feel like doing this

I mean I feel like doing it a long time so um I'm good to go uh well look I

think the recruiting process belongs to everyone it belongs to uh Michael and his scouting staff and evaluations and

and setting that up the recruiting department in terms of um you know making this an attractive uh visitor or

destination for the um athlete um but it's also part of the coaching job and certainly the head coach has a big uh

role in that as well to ensure the the athlet the student athletes that um

you're giving them what they want and there's not always a fit there sometimes that doesn't quite match up but uh this

this university has so much to offer and and and our football program has a lot to offer that I think that we'll be able

to attract um you know a good quality player Michael Ross Then Caroline

Michael per wtvd coach what have you learned during your year away from the sidelines or even being around the

Washington program in terms of different schemes or running a college football uh program in terms of some of the

intricacies when it comes to recruiting or nil the day and day out operations um yeah first of all um Le

it's a lot of fun being in media that's not bad um spent a lot of time and as

you said around the Washington program coach fish was um uh you know I I was

out there in the spring training camp during regular season and uh you know I saw a lot of of what what they did uh

and I think you know Kos fish runs a a pro program if you will model after Pro

program I think it's very similar to what U you know my thoughts would be on that what Michael and I talked about so

and Michael work them out there as well too so um yeah I think that's definitely a you know uh let's call it a template

but you know every every Situation's different you know it wouldn't be that exactly but yeah and but being away from

it has given me an opportunity to look you know I never really watched college football much during the college season

I watched it very much in the spring looking at C prospects and so forth so uh this year I had a much better chance

to follow the college game go to college games see the college experience on campus uh which I did uh that several

times it was awesome go to several high school games um which other than watch my kids play it wasn't also wasn't

something that I I had much of an opportunity to do uh so I think I have a better overall uh perspective of of just

the game of football and certainly the fan interest in football uh I think sometimes when you're just locked in a

coaching your team you you're not as aware of what the um external um

excitement and and energy and feelings are um and now that that became much

more evident to me and you know I think it's all it's great it's you know most popular sport uh by far and I can see

why everybody's into the world just you know a lot of it all a lot of it just

fall around football folks I've got six more written down so don't raise your hand at this point we'll see how we get

through um Ross Then Caroline Andrea and Chris in the back go ahead Ross Ross

Martin CBS Sports 247 Sports in the big hitters only podcast uh did you talk to

coach Nick sain and if so what questions did you have for him what advice did you seek from him and what kind of stuff did

he tell you to get prepared for the college game yeah um you know Co and I have a a

long friendship and relationship I have all the respect in the world love coach

um in all honesty I would just keep our conversations private I don't think you know really that that's those are to be

shared publicly U I appreciate the question but there's nobody I respect Mor coach sa um and he's he's been a

great friend uh for I know 40 years on the AL Caroline Caroline Will

from The Daily first for Bill you mentioned wanting UNC botball to become a prite program what are the first two

steps of that what are the points of emphasis for that and then for Bubba what was your first reaction when you

heard that bill was a candidate coach uh well yes in terms of when I say

a pro program I would say you know through my experience what we um did in

terms of training developing players uh running Pro systems Pro techniques um so

when the players leave here they're not this isn't um um going from the wishbone

to a pro offense that it would be you know similar terminology similar techniques and fundamentals similar

training similar uh preparation techniques that uh have been very successful for me through the years than

I know that other NFL teams are using whether other college teams are using or not I mean some are some aren't but I

just know that these will prepare the players um you know for that so um I'm

not and then from the the general manager head coach model again it's a

similar type of situation we're evaluating high school kids and College transfer portal players NFL teams are

evaluating college players and NFL free agent players so again there are some similarities that's all I'm not saying

it's identical in the back left Andrea then Chris Andrea Aden with

espn.com you mentioned that it had been a dream of yours to coach in college the

first part of the question is when during this last year did you start thinking yes I definitely want to coach

college and then the second part is Carolina hasn't won an ACC title since

1980 what during your conversations with the folks here gave you the hope optimism belief that you could get this

program to winning championships again well the the sport from uh the

chancellor buba boorder of Trustees uh they love me all the people I've talked there tremendous support here um I

believe believe we're going to run a good program and and have a good team so um we'll see where all that goes um yeah

look uh I was we draft at LT in 1981 after the 1980 season and we talked

about um all success that they had especially you know defensively with you

know buddy Curry and Donell Thompson I mean all those guys Paul Davis I'm all those guys on the on the team and they I

mean those are those are great teams so um ton of respect for what uh you know

what's been done here at Carolina and certainly that 1980 team gave up 120

points on defense I mean it's pretty good and half of more to Oklahoma so

other than that they really good um but yeah you know well I'm I'm not making

any predictions I'm just saying I'm going to come in here and do the best I can with a with a great School uh we're going to have a great program we'll see

what those results take us and the be back and then Chris uh coach Kevin

Conley with Fox8 in Greensboro North Carolina do you envision yourself going into

living rooms of high school perspective high school players and kids that you are recruiting or will you leave that to

other people yeah no I mean I would love to do that there are only so many opportunities for uh a College Edge

coach to do that based on a compliance rules so uh when those opportunities are there and if that um it was in fact the

best thing to to do in that process I'm absolutely in H I think the majority of the head coaching recruiting will be

done on campus um but look those rules might change and so forth so whatever

helps our team that's what I want to do Chris hi coach Chris Lee from wo right

here um I wanted to uh expound on the recruiting question as well are you looking to possibly win the state of

North Carolina as far as the best recruits from the state surrounding states like Virginia and South Carolina

are you looking to cast more of a wide net and are there's certain uh I guess U characteristics that you're looking for

in recruits specifically yeah uh great question uh both absolutely uh we want to recruit

well in state and and in this area uh which is there's a lot of good football players um in North Carolina but um you

know the surrounding states but North Carolina is a National University I mean this is you know the best public

university in the country um any kid that wants a good education being a good football program being a great campus

being you know playing a great environment um we'll recruit any kid to come here I mean I've been on just about

every campus in major campus in the country um there's not many nicer in

North Carolina you can't get a better education than you can at this school so there's a lot going for it I think they

recruit nationally uh you know good look there's certain kids that don't want to leave their region I mean I get that but

I think we'll be able to recruit nationally we'll certainly try to last three questions are Luke David

and trayon on the end on the right side coach luk de from the Rolling Observer

just curious there were reports that you had prepared a document or organizational f are those were those

accurate uh I reserve a followup with the answers yeah I mean don't believe everything you read in the papers all

right I have no idea where that came from I don't have a 400 page document I

mean and the thing I was got CID [Music]

nothing in terms of your thinking for what you did want to do with the job at what point did you start thinking your

head if I had a college program to run this is what I would do because you obviously spent so many years in the NFL

uh uh world of think how I would run an NFL team or organization if I read a

different one than the Patriot at what point did College start really becoming a focus of your thinking you knowth I

mean that's a great question here's what I would say college kind of came to me this year um I didn't necessarily go and

seek it out but I had um many coaches I mean we're probably a

couple of dozen coaches talk to me and say hey can we can sit down and talk to

you about these things the let's call it salary cap of pro football relative to

college football the um headsets the Green Dot the two-minute warning the um

the tablets on the sideline those were all rules changes this year in college

football that were either the same or similar to what we had in the NFL and

and these coaches said hey coach can we just talk to you about how you did this how you did that what you know how did

you use this what you know what how did you handle the you know talk about the two-minute you know how did that what

that warning how did that affect your strategy at the end of the half the end of the game how did you look at it you know how did you break it down um and so

as those conversations started and then the Personnel conversations started relative to U salary cap and and how you

spend whatever the allotment of money you have is uh whether that's by player by position uh by you know uh freshmen

recruits transfer how did you look at that and so um I had multiple

conversations uh with several coaches in this conference within the Big 10 Southeast Conference um and others so uh

and sometimes there were coaches who were on the staff that were responsible for uh what's called situational

football for kind of organizing that or uh in some cases a person in the organization that was maybe in football

but now being moved over to the let's call it semien manager type role uh that

wasn't familiar with that aspect of what was now invading college football right

with the you know the revenue share in the nil so uh I'd say that started to

make me a lot more aware of it because the first thing I had to do is learn about it and say okay well what are you dealing with here and then they would kind of explain all right well here's

our situation then you hear another coach at another school explained it sort of the same way but it was different at his school for whatever

reason it was and so forth on and on and on so um in the end um long answer to a

short question here sorry uh you know how I like to ramp on a press conference um but yeah you just you know

as you learn different things about different programs you start to put all together then there's some com common

threads and then there's some there's some variables last two questions are David teal and then Trevon on the right

hand side coach David tal with the Virginia pilot Daily Press in Northford Bubba in this era

of Revenue sharing player compensation and the house settlement is

it POS possible to be all in on football and men's

basketball institutionally financially yeah great question David

and uh I think so and I think it's uh why we're trying to do what we're doing I think if you go all in on those two

sports those two sports provide all the finances for the rest of the department the more successful we are in football

the more successful we are in basketball the more opportunities we're going to be able to provide for for everyone else here so I'm delighted with it and I

think uh our future is incredibly bright given his leadership and that of Hubert Davis our women's basketball program

starting Revenue share this year with the NCA tournament and Courtney's done a fantastic job so I think the continued

investment is an investment in the future of Carolina Athletics I goofed I forgot Nia I said

yes to her a while ago Nia go ahead hi coach I wanted to ask what challenges you anticipate um having in the future

from transitioning from the NFL to college sports particularly in coaching players with them influencing them

whether they're in the portal or just recruits who think about com to

Carolina um well I mean we'll see um you know I've had an opportunity to coach

young players at various points in my career whether it was you know kids on U other players on my kids teams or uh

again had an opportunity to work some in in uh the University of Washington be around that team for uh multiple weeks

out there so um but again it's it's it's a process and i' would say as a teacher you try to find ways to

help the students help the players and if you can do that then they have a tendency to to listen and and want more

if they're motivated which most of them are um and if you can't then you know then they look somewhere else so um I

know I can help individual players I know I can help our team be successful and I do all I can to to give my best

effort to do that on a daily basis you can count on that last question second round end Tron Tron abc11 coach you uh

your ties to this University are well documented uh you brought your dad's hoodie um there's a picture of you in

Kean Stadium as a youngster floating around here uh you mentioned that college came to you how important was it

that it was this University um and your ties to it whether it be in the past or your father's size um as opposed to a

traditional Powerhouse football program it was most important it was

most important all the things that the University North Carolina stands for uh the academics the the cultural the

research the you know just the whole um everything it stands for both

athletically which has been tremendously successful in uh all sports um you know I I've spent um you know quite a bit of

time with Coach pamalo with Coach pry in the lacrosse program um and and many of

their players as well spoken with them so it's been um really kind of a connection to this school but everything

stand for um on the field off the field um and and really the destination that

Caroline is for uh really so many student athletes there there's so much opportunity here um you know I'm honored

to have an opportunity and and thrilled to be a part of it appreciate it coach belek thank you very much uh that
