everything you've been through how would
0:01
you describe what you've been through to
0:03
get to this point it's definitely been a
0:05
journey um I feel like that's pretty
0:07
much anybody's life just a lot of ups
0:09
and downs but um it's it's all trying
0:12
you know it's all for the for the better
0:14
I believe jayen how if you managed these
0:17
first three games you know kind of
0:18
getting uh you know more extended run as
0:20
far as playing time obviously you know
0:22
first two years kind of you know deal
0:24
with injury and obviously am was there
0:25
and stuff like that how would the
0:27
managing I guess the increased minutes
0:28
been these first weekends just really
0:30
going hard in practice practice supposed
0:31
to be harder than the games uh so just
0:34
going as hard as I can in practice
0:35
prepare for the games you know watching
0:37
film uh just trying to you know grow
0:39
each day and value each day what would
0:42
you say is the what would you say is
0:43
something or some things that you really
0:46
learned playing behind armanda for a
0:49
couple of years um it's just like little
0:51
small nuances like you know just playing
0:53
like how to stay out of foul trouble um
0:56
just you know playing through fatigue
0:58
just uh being a great communicator or
1:00
stuff like that and were there any
1:01
things that he told you to like hey look
1:04
when it's your time keep this in mind
1:06
were there any like sort of like advice
1:08
type Things N really we we never had
1:10
like really specific talks he was always
1:12
just kind of like just work hard stay
1:13
ready you time will come Jaylen what
1:16
kind of bond do you have with Seth I
1:19
mean you guys are are in the same class
1:22
you both had kind of different different
1:26
paths than the traditional way I mean
1:27
you had your injuries he didn't play
1:29
much as freshman year then he went into
1:30
the portal summer and now he's back and
1:33
now you guys are both flourishing I mean
1:35
what like has that brought you closer
1:37
together just sort of the bum in thr
1:39
yeah um SE I mean I've known him uh I've
1:42
been closer to him than anybody else in
1:44
the program we live together for a
1:46
couple of years uh that's my guy um so
1:49
you know we've just been been through a
1:50
lot together and we always talk about
1:52
stuff like that so it's it's great to be
1:54
able to be in this position with him and
1:55
us being able to flourish this year do
1:57
you feel like you guys seeing each other
1:59
succeed this year that lifts you know
2:02
both of you up and inspires you to play
2:04
even better for sure um we always
2:06
encourage each other we always going to
2:07
be in each other's corner so uh it's
2:09
just great to you know be able to play
2:11
here with him and uh be able to
2:13
experience this year with him are you
2:14
someone who reflects much and as in
2:17
you're getting out there first three
2:19
games you played a lot of minutes you're
2:20
the starter you're the guy in many
2:22
respects down low you ever sit back and
2:24
think about the
2:26
path from when he had the first injury
2:29
to this point and just kind of maybe
2:31
times had doubt you would even get to
2:33
this point you reflect about those those
2:36
processes yeah I mean we're like a
2:38
little bit In the Heat of the season so
2:39
I don't do too much reflection like that
2:41
but um probably like in my free time of
2:43
like down time I kind of think like hey
2:45
this been um it's a a huge blessing to
2:47
just be able to be here and be able to
2:49
you know be a part of this journey um
2:52
and and look back and how far I came and
2:55
like how much more I got to keep going
2:58
is this something that came naturally to
3:00
you to be able to handle this kind of
3:02
challenge or have you had people in your
3:04
corner that have had to help you through
3:06
it maybe some down some really down
3:08
times yeah definitely I've had people um
3:10
in my corner to help me I couldn't
3:12
there's no way I could have got through
3:13
this by myself it took a lot of prayer
3:15
uh my parents or you know people of
3:16
Faith just like me and so they always
3:18
just even them being able to be here um
3:21
just praying for me and uh just talking
3:23
to me every day like even my High School
3:24
coaches back home trainers uh my my
3:27
siblings um everybody back home friend
3:30
my closest friends they just been you um
3:31
really instrumental in you know helping
3:33
me throughout the process I can ask one
3:35
more on that how much more fun is it to
3:37
play 25 or 30 minutes and just play five
3:39
and sit and watch something else I mean
3:40
I like playing basketball so it's really
3:42
fun that's an easy sof Jaylen with all
3:45
this time between games a lot of
3:47
practice a lot of film what have you
3:50
guys learned about what it takes to
3:52
reach that Elite level you want to reach
3:54
and obviously have to play at to win a
3:55
tournament like the Maui invitation uh
3:57
it it takes a lot it takes everything
3:59
that you got um and not to just get at
4:02
that point but to you know sustain that
4:04
level of intensity um and attention to
4:06
detail coach Davis tells us every that
4:08
every day that's how um players become
4:11
Elite that's how teams become Elite and
4:13
how they win so just um every day
4:16
locking in on the details and uh just
4:18
staying consistent with that what have
4:20
those areas been so far that you noticed
4:22
that yall need to you know uh just you
4:25
know defending rebounding taking care of
4:26
the ball I feel like those three simple
4:28
things um can come up can be be really
4:31
big for us in in
4:34
games go ahead Jaylen coach Davis said
4:37
there's more in your bag that you
4:38
haven't shown so what's left in the bag
4:41
you shown three-pointer mid-range been
4:43
able to go inside what do you work on
4:45
consistently just personally to show
4:47
more on the court from your play um I'm
4:50
not sure really like how to describe
4:53
what else I got left but I feel like I
4:55
haven't played my best basketball yet
4:57
and um and once I I get to that Rhythm
5:01
and um yall see me like really playing
5:03
my best ball and that's when uh you know
5:06
we'll start doing a whole lot better as
5:07
well Jaylen aside from the Hoops what
5:10
are you most looking forward to about
5:11
seeing Hawaii I love the beach um I've
5:15
never my first time going to the ocean
5:17
or like being by the ocean was um our
5:19
two years ago we went to the Outer Banks
5:21
on a team trip so I get really excited
5:24
about being like around water so uh just
5:27
I've never been to Hawaii either so
5:28
going to the water being by the beach
5:31
stuff like that it be really exciting to
5:32
me Jay what do you remember about last
5:35
year's uh know battle for Atlantis where
5:38
you have you know three games stack you
5:39
know back to back to back like that just
5:41
what do you kind of remember about not
5:43
only you know the the turnaround between
5:44
game to game but just even the
5:46
preparation of you know watching the
5:48
film the next day just what do you
5:49
remember about that whole process it
5:50
takes the same amount of effort each day
5:52
um and like so you know whether we you
5:56
know win or lose a game you got the you
5:59
got the next day day so you have to you
6:00
know reset quickly um you got to really
6:04
take care of your body to be prepared
6:06
for the next game and the next day how
6:08
would you describe what it's like
6:10
working a ball screen with with Elliott
6:13
like a pick and roll cuz it seems he
6:16
he's able to find you in so many
6:17
different ways I mean it seems like you
6:19
always have to be ready you know no
6:21
matter what like take take us through
6:23
what is like setting the screen and
6:24
Diving to the to the cup yeah um so so
6:28
Elliot is really he's a really quick guy
6:29
so you know we want to just make sure
6:32
that we're able to you know get him
6:33
going downhill he's really fast uh he's
6:36
really unselfish too so you know we talk
6:38
um throughout practice and throughout
6:40
the games as well and just like what we
6:42
see what he sees from the defense and
6:43
what I see from my guy doing and then
6:45
how we going to play these ball screens
6:47
so he's he's a really calculated guy and
6:49
he's easy to play with as well has he
6:51
ever been like like like you're talking
6:53
about when you guys were talking during
6:54
the game they like all right look next
6:55
time get ready for it this way yeah he
6:59
let you know he'll never put you in a
7:00
bad position or anything he's letting
7:01
you know he's like this is what they
7:03
doing this is what I see so this is how
7:04
you should play this ball screen whether
7:06
you got to slip or something or like get
7:07
out quickly hit the guy flip the ball
7:09
screen something like that he's always
7:11
he's really vocal when it comes to you
7:13
know how we play ball screens how much
7:15
vocal how much more vocal now is he than
7:18
he was last year oh he's a he's a lot
7:20
more vocal as well uh I feel like he's
7:22
definitely found his uh his role and his
7:25
fit you know he's uh he's got he's got a
7:27
Swagger um and that's that's going to be
7:29
h for it so you know just him playing
7:31
with confidence every game it great it's
7:33
great to see his grow from last
7:35
year jayen obviously got the emotion
7:38
from you the other night but what was it
7:39
like for you to be up in the air and see
7:41
Elliot right there oh that was cool I
7:43
saw him out the corner of my eye U so
7:45
that's awesome he's always everybody's
7:46
biggest hype man so that's amazing he's
7:48
a great teammate have you seen the
7:49
Butters from that from that yeah yeah I
7:51
have yeah they're nice so pick and roll
7:54
or pick and pop uh whichever gets the
7:57
bucket
7:59
talking about the beach did you when you
8:01
guys went to the Bahamas last year did
8:03
you like try to head out to the beach
8:05
yeah yeah um me and Seth we went I think
8:08
his parents were there some of some of
8:10
the other guys parents were there um
8:13
beach was beautiful it was
8:15
amazing jayen last one go ahead coach
8:18
Davis in the preseason and early part of
8:21
this season he said this is a quieter
8:22
team than it was last year U has Elliott
8:26
being more vocal sort of made up for the
8:29
some of the more vocal guys from last
8:31
year like Armando Cormac you know
8:33
leaving yeah for sure him being the
8:35
point guard being the star point guard
8:37
um you know you got you got to assume a
8:39
role of leadership so he's definitely
8:41
done that he's doing a great
8:43
job thanks J
8:46
appreciate thanks for coming
