there was a certain point in the game
0:02
where obviously Memphis at first was you
0:03
know kind of controlling things on the
0:05
glass but it seemed like for you guys
0:06
there was a shift maybe late first half
0:08
and then into the second half what were
0:10
some of the things you were kind of
0:11
telling your guys as far as you know the
0:13
need to be aggressive uh on the on the
0:15
on the glass well I I think it was two
0:17
parts one from an offensive standpoint
0:20
uh one of the things that we always talk
0:21
about is dominating points in the paint
0:23
through poster penetration I felt like
0:25
we were settling for too many threes
0:27
particularly in the first half and so we
0:29
weren putting pressure on the rim and we
0:31
weren't living in the paint and living
0:33
at the free throw line then defensively
0:35
we just weren't um physical or strong
0:37
enough particularly um in in terms of
0:40
getting rebounds we loose balls rebounds
0:43
we weren't getting two hands on it we
0:45
weren't being strong with it and you
0:47
know we identified and talked about if
0:49
we can do those two things obviously
0:53
more than those two but just offensively
0:56
get the shots that we want closer to the
0:58
basket and then be able to finish
1:00
possession with the rebound that it'll
1:02
really put us in a position to be
1:03
successful in the game today if you
1:05
along those lines like what did you
1:07
think you got out of tonight a lot right
1:10
a lot I mean
1:12
there's there were teaching points
1:14
pretty much on every possession on both
1:16
ends of the floor on what to do and
1:18
continue to do and what not to do and so
1:22
this will give all of us um examples to
1:26
be able to learn from and grow from um
1:29
also being able to play a true Road game
1:32
specifically for this team in regards to
1:34
our second game of the season we're on
1:36
the road at Kansas so that won't be our
1:38
first true Road game um and so it gives
1:42
this new different team experience of
1:46
playing on the road not just in a game
1:48
but you know traveling shoot arounds
1:50
meals meetings and so um it's something
1:54
that we had done before when we get to
1:56
uh get to Kansas you were very clear
1:58
about how fast you want the guys to play
2:01
there was a stretch in the second half
2:02
was that to your liking about the pace
2:04
they were playing and some I think we
2:06
should play faster I I felt like um the
2:09
the pace was getting to where we wanted
2:11
to in the second half but the pace was
2:15
able to get there because we were
2:17
getting stops and rebounds that's that
2:19
that's what and I tell the guys what has
2:20
to fuel us is our efficiency on the
2:23
defensive in we get stops we get
2:25
rebounds then we can go we can run I
2:27
felt like it was better in the second
2:30
have but I
2:31
feel that we ran really well for October
2:34
15th it's nowhere near where I want to
2:36
be um throughout the season hey coach
2:39
what what one area that enlightened you
2:41
and one what area that disappointed you
2:43
today um just being able to execute in
2:46
in game type situations um um being able
2:50
to get a stop when we needed to get a
2:52
stop be able to score when we needed to
2:54
score being able to execute and pressure
2:57
situations one of the things that I told
2:59
him is don't let let their pressure
3:00
dictate and decide how disciplined and
3:02
efficient we are on the offensive end so
3:05
those are lessons to be learned and
3:08
um as I said before I think there's a
3:11
teaching Point whether to continue to do
3:13
it or not to do it pretty much on every
3:16
possession and to be able to get that
3:18
experience and those examples early um
3:21
before the season start is just really
3:23
beneficial to all of us what did you
3:25
make of your way the offense was able to
3:27
flow without RJ in there obviously you
3:29
know has the 33 Elliott gets the double
3:32
double just would you kind of make it
3:33
the way that the you know offense was
3:35
able to you know create a rhythm
3:36
obviously without you know your your
3:37
leading score yeah I thought you know I
3:40
I I thought we really move the ball
3:42
really well when you when you get 21
3:44
assists that's that's sharing the
3:46
basketball now we got to knock out the
3:48
21 turnovers but the 21 assists that's
3:52
real and one of the things that we talk
3:54
about is to pass up good shots to get
3:56
great shots this is an unselfish team
3:58
that just instinctive want to make the
4:00
extra pass and so getting 21 assists is
4:03
not surprising to me but obviously we
4:06
got to clean up the 21 turnovers
4:08
questions in the back hey coach
4:10
obviously U right here at the
4:12
back obviously you're here for you know
4:15
the the game and to get the experience
4:17
on the road here in an environment like
4:19
in Memphis but the takeaway from the day
4:21
being able to go to St Drew Children's
4:23
Research Hospital how important is that
4:25
for you and your players to you know be
4:27
able to witness something like that and
4:28
be here for a great call well it was
4:30
huge for us and I spoke to the team
4:33
before the game I always say this to him
4:35
that a blessing is not just for you but
4:37
it's to work through you to benefit
4:39
somebody else other than just you and
4:41
our team in our program was blessed by
4:43
the experience of spending time at St
4:46
JW's hospital yesterday um after the
4:48
game uh two uh kids that we met at St
4:52
JW's hospital they came to the game and
4:54
they came back into the locker room
4:56
Sammy and Aspen and um we did played uh
5:00
goish uh Jinga and uh painted pictures
5:04
with them yesterday and we invited them
5:06
to the game them and their family and so
5:08
they came in the locker room after the
5:10
game and celebrated with us and um again
5:13
their presence brought tremendous joy to
5:15
all of us and it was a blessing for us
5:17
to be able to spend time with them and
5:18
their families got time for a couple
5:20
more questions keber what did you see
5:23
from Seth trible tonight I mean the 33
5:25
points I mean it was pretty awesome at
5:27
times what stood out to you about the
5:29
way he play well I think the thing that
5:31
stands out to me is the natural
5:33
progression of college basketball you
5:35
know in the midst of so much change with
5:37
the transfer portal nil the fifth year
5:41
covid year um all the involvement of
5:45
Agents everything we forget about
5:50
growth
5:53
and that's
5:55
what Seth and Jay wash you know they
5:58
they're getting a an opportunity a
6:00
chance for a bigger role and given that
6:02
opportunity a chance because of their
6:04
hard work um their maturity they they're
6:08
they're a different player than they
6:10
were
6:11
before
6:13
and that's what college is about it's
6:16
about growing up it's about getting
6:18
better it's about improving and growing
6:21
every year and because of all the things
6:23
in college you forget about that or or a
6:26
lot of times kids parents everyone tries
6:29
to speed up the timeline right
6:32
and here's a kid in Seth
6:36
that is one of the best games I've ever
6:38
seen since I've been here and it's
6:41
because of his hard work and his
6:43
dedication to this University and to
6:45
this program last two questions back
6:47
left then Andrew hey coach just up the
6:49
back here uh obviously I just want to
6:50
get your perspective on what you thought
6:52
of Memphis out there tonight obviously
6:53
they weren't ranked in the top 25 but
6:55
from what you saw tonight do you think
6:56
they could be a NCAA tournament team
6:58
100% rankings don't mean anything and
7:01
especially preseason rankings mean
7:03
nothing uh coach Penny Hardaway is an
7:06
outstanding coach does a terrific job in
7:08
leading his program um it's a team of of
7:12
new players a lot of transfers uh one
7:15
returning player that played in a
7:16
rotation last year and for them to play
7:20
as a team tonight um alongside with
7:23
their talent um it's a team that
7:25
definitely is going to be NCAA
7:27
tournament team um their quickness their
7:29
athleticism their ability to score
7:32
versatility on the defensive end um
7:34
their athleticism to be able to rebound
7:36
and so um they're going to have a
7:38
terrific season last question Andrew
7:40
with the teaching points there's also
7:42
learning what do you what do you think
7:44
that Drake and Ian learned tonight
7:46
getting out there and seeing that it's
7:48
real when you're out there at this level
7:50
yeah I you know um they've been in so
7:54
many situations you know have played all
7:57
over the world and played in big- time
7:59
situations but you're right being on the
8:01
a true Road game playing at this level
8:03
is different for them and so this
8:06
atmosphere and this game was really good
8:08
for them too um giving them more game
8:11
type situations understanding time and
8:14
score understanding the importance of
8:16
the little things the boxing out the
8:17
talking in defense um the last two feet
8:21
of every pass you have to meet
8:22
especially in late game situations where
8:24
teams are trying to foul or steal those
8:27
are things that you can talk about in
8:29
practice ractice but to go through it
8:30
through a game allows them to gain so
8:33
much more experience and they need it
8:35
because they're going to be out there a
8:37
lot and so um the more experience that
8:40
they can get is is good news for us
8:42
thank you coach thanks everybody
8:43
appreciate
