the history not just the recent history
0:02
which you had but it goes way way way
0:05
back for Coach Smith playing at Kansas
0:07
and so many important meetings in
0:09
between Roy was there even Larry Brown
0:11
who was a star here LED them to a title
0:13
what do you know about the history
0:14
between these two well only brief I know
0:16
that Roy um coached there um and just
0:20
from you tell me de Smith played there
0:21
so um think there's some Carolina ties
0:23
there and I think this would just be a
0:26
uh a great G good game for both of our
0:28
teams you know just from you know
0:30
Carolina and in the Kansas history um
0:33
just to have you know a lot of Hall of
0:35
Fame coaches from both universities um
0:38
just be a part of this game I mean last
0:40
time I played Kansas was my sophomore
0:42
year and um that's the uh most recent
0:47
times I goes back to I know it goes
0:48
beyond um when I was playing so uh I'm
0:52
excited for it they have a couple guys
0:53
still from that team R Harris how much
0:55
did you have to deal with him in that
0:57
title game yeah I mean so it's crazy cuz
0:59
I played the one when I was in high
1:01
school um I going say on the ebl circuit
1:04
he was playing for moan and then match
1:06
up with him again um my sophomore year
1:08
in the championship game he's really
1:10
good guard um defensively he's play play
1:13
makes for the others um he's able to get
1:15
downhill so um definitely looking
1:17
forward to that match up again um so
1:19
yeah RJ we've seen so many games that
1:21
get scheduled now are always neutral
1:23
Court you know it doesn't feel like
1:25
there's as many home and homes and this
1:27
one's going to be one this next year you
1:29
you know we've seen Duke and Arizona are
1:31
doing it right now like as a player like
1:34
how exciting is that that you know it's
1:36
kind of we don't see these kind of games
1:38
between Mar teams anymore on each
1:40
other's home courts it seems like
1:41
nonconference wise yeah I mean that's
1:43
big time I think it's it's great for you
1:45
know college basketball uh just to have
1:47
these neutral well these home and away
1:49
games and kind of alternate each year I
1:51
think it's great col basketball and
1:53
different environment you know for us
1:55
it's like you know we're going down
1:56
there uh to their stadium and then it
1:59
could be vers next year so um just to
2:01
get a feel for the environment the
2:03
energy what different crowds bring I
2:05
think that's just huge for college
2:07
basketball in general and it's something
2:09
that each player um should Aspire and
2:11
look look forward to because you only
2:13
get these type of games and type of
2:15
moments once in a while so um it's
2:17
definitely something that you want to
2:18
look back on and definitely something
2:19
that you want to take full advantage of
2:21
because um it's fun at the end of the
2:23
day I I know it's been two two seasons
2:25
have passed since you played them last
2:28
but what stands out just in your mind in
2:30
particular about that national
2:32
championship game in New Orleans yeah I
2:35
mean that we were just one rebound away
2:37
from winning it uh definitely something
2:39
that you know the following year I was
2:41
rewatching that game over and over again
2:43
because you know you get so close to
2:45
your dream um that you set just as a
2:48
freshman or just as a as a high school
2:51
athlete like you always want to win a
2:52
National Championship just from watching
2:54
um different teams different players
2:56
play in March Madness and you going to
2:58
be the last team standing so just to be
3:00
that close it was definitely
3:02
Heartbreaker for me a lot of emotions I
3:04
can remember from that game I remember
3:06
just you know looking up at the clock
3:07
and then watching his zero and the
3:08
buzzer go off and um it took a while for
3:11
the tear to come but they ended up
3:14
um right going right down my face in
3:16
terms of like just a lot of the hard
3:19
work that we put in um as a team
3:22
throughout that year the year we had and
3:24
how we how we changed that whole year
3:26
around it was um a tremendous feeling
3:28
but just the
3:30
um end up short like that um it was
3:32
heartbreaking so it definitely motivated
3:34
me you know the next two years um but
3:37
then also again this year you sitting
3:38
over there what do they call it the
3:40
thumper you had the thing on the bench
3:42
right during that game trying to work
3:44
but the cramps out of your legs yeah I
3:45
mean I think for that year we've played
3:48
five to six guys so um all the way to
3:51
the end and um obviously like you know
3:53
your body the temple and sometimes like
3:56
your body gives out and I think we just
3:58
you know ended up short with in terms of
3:59
our energy and uh injuries played a role
4:02
into it and I started cramping a little
4:03
bit so it's a lot when you're playing
4:05
you know 40 minutes every game every
4:07
night um but I enjoy doing it I'm not
4:10
going to sit here and complain about it
4:12
um so but I mean definitely just
4:15
remembering that just just shows of how
4:17
much like as a team like we really put a
4:20
lot of hard work and basically put our
4:22
lives on the line for that game and for
4:24
that whole year just to uh end up in the
4:27
goal that we really wanted RJ at this
4:29
point you're the only player on this UNC
4:31
team that played in that game uh how
4:34
often do you get to I guess share those
4:36
stories with some of the newer guys on
4:38
the team and do they ever ask you about
4:40
it at all yeah I me I really haven't got
4:41
the chance to really um tell them about
4:46
my experience more so like Seth and Jay
4:48
was because they came the year after so
4:51
um they I mean they've watched I think
4:53
Seth was down there in New Orleans was
4:54
pretty funny funny story um uh his I
4:58
going to say his senior but um more so
5:00
those two guys because they were like
5:02
the next year up and um just to kind of
5:05
tell them about about the experience and
5:07
how hard it is to get to that National
5:09
Championship like it's not an easy Road
5:11
um but I think that's what I've
5:13
instilled in the guys this year like
5:15
this year is going to be hard there's
5:16
going to be times there going to be
5:18
times where it's good and bad times but
5:19
we have to embrace all of those and stay
5:21
together as a team because um it's going
5:23
to be a roller coaster they going to
5:25
have games where things go your way and
5:28
when they don't that's the way
5:29
basketball works and um but at the same
5:31
time understanding who we are as a team
5:33
who we are as a culture in the
5:35
university and um it's an experience
5:38
that you should embrace like obviously
5:40
this comes with expectations and um a
5:44
lot of outside noise but I think one
5:47
thing about it is you should always run
5:48
towards it never away from it because
5:50
expectations and pressures are privilege
5:52
and um here in North Carolina that comes
5:55
with that but I mean I think we're all
5:56
here for a reason to go off that a
5:58
little bit last week we were talking to
5:59
Hubert actually and he was saying that
6:02
he's kind of talked to you about being
6:03
the and he described you as like the
6:05
connector or whatever like between
6:07
obviously the new guys and the transfers
6:09
and things like that with you hav been
6:11
here for a long time how have you kind
6:12
of embraced that role of maybe
6:15
leadership and yeah like some of the
6:17
stuff you were just saying of you know
6:18
kind of imparting you know some of your
6:20
experience to the guys that are you know
6:22
just getting here for the first time
6:23
yeah it's been new um but uh I've
6:27
adapted to it really well I believe so
6:29
um
6:30
just in terms of putting myself in
6:32
situations where I feel uncomfortable
6:34
that way I can feel comfortable um and
6:37
kind of just like it allows you to learn
6:39
more about yourself like um I've always
6:41
been a lead by an example type of leader
6:44
but now it's more about being more vocal
6:46
having a good spirit um because that
6:48
uplifts others like I have to make sure
6:50
that um I'm doing my job in terms of
6:54
making sure everyone is good making sure
6:56
there's good spirits not just in a
6:57
locker room on the court even in
6:58
practice because there could be days
7:00
when everyone's in their head and that's
7:02
normal that's life and um I've learned
7:05
that through my five years of of doing
7:06
this being around here and um that's
7:10
what I I learned so like obviously me
7:12
and coav had a lot of conversations
7:13
about me being the connector and now I'm
7:15
the older guy and it's going to be
7:17
difficult because you know it's a lot of
7:20
younger guys and new faces and usually
7:22
we have you know a couple of older guys
7:25
maybe like four to six and now it's just
7:27
basically me and J whip but I've been
7:29
here the longest so I've been seen the
7:31
ins and outs I I know how things roll so
7:34
I'm just taking that challenge and
7:36
understanding that I'm capable of doing
7:37
it I'm embracing it RJ couple more guys
7:40
La last year Elliott was a high school
7:42
senior playing college ball how have you
7:44
seen him grow and and in what ways who
7:48
going into this year yeah I mean I think
7:49
Elliot has always been a phenomenal uh
7:52
player point guard playmaker I mean
7:55
whatever you want to call it um just his
7:57
strides as last year just classifying up
7:59
as a uh as a as a senior going to be a
8:02
freshman like last year he could have
8:03
been high school and you could see Spurs
8:05
of his games where it's like um he seems
8:08
mature he seems like the game slow down
8:10
and whereas this year he's confident
8:13
he's um he's vocal um and he's doing
8:17
what Elliot does and I think that's a
8:19
testament to his true work ethic he
8:21
works really hard um he's hard on
8:23
himself when things don't go his way but
8:25
I think that just shows that he just
8:26
wants to be great and just to see um
8:29
success and the strides he's made this
8:31
off season and leading up to uh game
8:33
time now I'm super proud of him and I
8:35
know he's got a lot more left in the
8:38
tank for him to just to kind of show you
8:39
guys that we've been seeing all along um
8:42
but uh he's going to be really great for
8:44
us so I'm proud what do you remember
8:46
about Griffin from the Alabama game last
8:48
March yeah um I know he was guarding me
8:51
the whole game um that obviously had a
8:54
longer Defender just so make it um
8:57
difficult for me to make you know tough
8:59
shots tougher shots uh um kind of push
9:04
out on the perimeter for um to catch the
9:06
basketball so uh just little stuff like
9:08
that um I think most of I rewatched that
9:11
game most of the shots were all good
9:13
looks they weren't anything that were um
9:17
difficult for me to make I just missed
9:18
him so um but he's a great defender I
9:21
remember seeing him in uh CP3 Camp as
9:24
well so um definitely looking forward to
9:26
the game but you didn't guard him no I
9:29
think I started uh as last one Adam
9:33
thank you uh how much have you guys
9:35
Hubert was in here earlier and said that
9:37
I think they counted 15 Miss layups of
9:39
dunks I think it started with me I
9:41
missed a lot of the layup I mean there
9:43
were there were several so so how much I
9:46
was going to say how much have you guys
9:47
heard about that from the coaches since
9:49
the other night and how much has
9:50
finishing or finishing better been sort
9:52
of one of the talking points these last
9:54
couple days yeah I mean it's it's been
9:57
huge I mean we seen it over and over
9:58
again in film so uh he hared on that in
10:01
film sessions but um I'm pretty sure we
10:04
have a finishing drill today in practice
10:06
cuz we did yesterday so um he knows
10:08
we're athletic he knows we're capable of
10:10
making those layups but now we got more
10:11
so just concentrate and focus on doing
10:13
it because we can do it I think
10:15
sometimes we just uh get out of
10:18
character in the way just kind of just
10:19
he always says make the easy play and I
10:21
think sometimes we really don't do that
10:22
we just try to go for home run so uh
10:25
just finishing around the rim and being
10:26
strong with the ball be confident when
10:27
we go into the lane and uh focus on
10:30
finishing because um we're athletic for
10:33
reason so we have to use those of our
10:34
abilities thanks
