the team locked in where you wanted to
0:02
be after going through the fall practice
0:04
I mean you covered all the bases and got
0:05
the team where you want to be going into
0:08
your first game going into the first
0:10
game I like the direction that we're
0:12
going um you know there's a lot to
0:14
improve on a lot to continue to work on
0:18
but um I like our Improvement I like our
0:22
focus our attention to detail and um our
0:26
preparation um in regards to our first
0:29
game against a really good Elon team
0:31
concerns about concerns lingering
0:36
concerns um not concerns but just facts
0:40
that we've we've got to rebound the
0:42
basketball you know it's
0:44
just it's always been important to me
0:47
I've got it from coach Williams it's the
0:49
number one determining factor of outcome
0:50
of a game
0:52
and we're going to have to rebound the
0:54
basketball we're going to have to defend
0:56
and we're going to have to take care of
0:57
the basketball and those are three boxes
0:59
that have to be check
1:00
every day when you got a deep team like
1:03
you you go into a game with kind of a
1:05
set idea how you're going to substitute
1:07
or does it does it evolve during the
1:08
game um I I I think it's a combination
1:11
of both I I think you know going into
1:14
the game you have
1:15
rotations especially in the first half
1:17
that you definitely want to see but you
1:21
know the game is the game and that
1:22
dictates in terms of rotations and
1:25
styles and strategies and so um there is
1:30
a level of preparation in regards to the
1:33
game and of who's playing what type of
1:36
lineups that I like to see out there but
1:39
also let the game dictate itself what is
1:41
your uh level of are you pleased with
1:46
the speed how fast they're playing you
1:48
said you want to be the fastest team in
1:49
the country the way they're attacking
1:50
the basket I think 63 of your 133 shots
1:53
are right at The Rim in the two
1:54
exhibition games is that kind of what
1:56
you want to see moving forward I do I
1:58
you know I I do like the pace but the
2:01
the number one thing that I tell the
2:03
guys is where we get our pace is from
2:06
the defensive end it's getting stops and
2:08
rebounds that's what allows us to get
2:10
out into the break and uh be efficient
2:13
in transitioning from defense to offense
2:15
and so I tie it always back to defense
2:17
and rebounding that if we defend and
2:19
rebound that's where we can start um
2:23
getting out uh in transition our pitch
2:25
ahe heads have been really good I feel
2:27
like you know five guys are sprinting
2:30
offense and we're trying to get what we
2:32
want a layup or a dunk or a de post
2:34
catch or get fouled get to the free
2:35
throw line or a quick and open three by
2:37
our best three-point Shooters and
2:38
regardless of the opponent how valuable
2:40
is it that you could show them directly
2:41
the other day at about the eight or nine
2:43
minute Mark when he picked it up on
2:44
defense picked it up on the glass you
2:46
saw while they us your baskets it is I I
2:49
think that's great um to be
2:52
able you know one of the things that I I
2:55
tell them that you know I like rarely
2:58
will I use stats but I will use stats to
3:00
confirm what I already know so it was
3:03
great to be able to make that point to
3:05
them that a change was made with 9
3:08
minutes and 12 seconds to go in the
3:09
first half because we got after a
3:11
defensively he started rebounding the
3:12
basketball and then that allow us to get
3:14
out in transition so to be able to talk
3:16
about it and then show them actual
3:17
examples of that working out in our
3:20
favor for our benefit I think it's
3:22
really huge uh for this team youber I
3:25
was talking to Seth the other day and I
3:26
made the joke that it's a shame these
3:28
numbers don't count after the two
3:30
exhibition games that he's had they do
3:32
count for his season total yeah yeah um
3:35
you know and he but he he said to me um
3:38
I'm too good of a player to hold myself
3:40
back this
3:41
season what do you think has instilled
3:45
that has him believing that and has him
3:48
in this space that he appears to be in
3:50
going into this
3:51
season well it's to me it's the natural
3:55
progression of you know getting more
3:57
comfortable getting more confident
4:00
more mature in terms
4:03
of you know your game and and that's I
4:07
mean I was I was a better player my
4:09
sophomore year than I was my sophomore
4:11
year and a better player my junior year
4:13
to my sophomore year because of the
4:16
experience and the growth um not only on
4:18
the court but also off the court and so
4:21
um I think it's two things one it's a
4:23
natural progression of growth and then
4:25
number two is his hard work over this
4:27
summer he's put in the work to put
4:29
himself in a position to be playing the
4:31
way he is right now Hubert what are your
4:34
thoughts on uh coach Bennett retiring um
4:37
at Virginia couple weeks ago yeah I just
4:40
um I hadn't had a chance to speak with
4:42
him um we played against each other in
4:44
the NBA so we've known each other a long
4:46
time can't think of a a better Coach and
4:49
a better person um to be around to be an
4:53
example of
4:57
um really really really really miss him
5:01
because I think not only is he good for
5:03
college of basketball he's great for
5:04
college of basketball the way that he um
5:07
he coaches but he
5:09
coaches to make obviously his players a
5:13
better basketball player but to prepare
5:16
them for life it's it's bigger than
5:19
basketball for him and I just have
5:22
tremendous respect for him and his
5:24
family and um I wish that he didn't
5:28
retire um
5:31
and he'll be missed here when you
5:33
talking about defense and rebounding and
5:35
really pushing that or emphasizing that
5:37
message you think your guys are wired to
5:39
sort of embrace that the way you want
5:41
like some guys naturally are the types
5:43
that are really U competitive and really
5:45
want to go after it defensively others
5:47
may not instinctively right you have to
5:49
coach it out of them I mean do you have
5:51
a sense for what this group could be in
5:52
that regard yeah I think I think it's a
5:54
combination of both I mean I don't think
5:57
last year's team fully bought into the
6:00
importance of Defending and rebounding
6:02
until the Oklahoma game I I felt like
6:06
that's where they got it and that's
6:08
where we took off um my hope is that it
6:12
doesn't take to the 10th game of the
6:13
season that um that we can we can fully
6:18
commit to those two things and how
6:19
important it is for the success of this
6:21
team um but but it's something that I
6:25
talk about every day and I'm going to
6:28
talk about it every day for the
6:30
remainder of the Season we talk a lot
6:32
about year-to-year Improvement for
6:34
players we talk a lot about Elliot's
6:36
Improvement across the board it looks
6:38
like the game has slowed down even more
6:40
for him with the way he's maneuvering
6:42
screens I mean have you noticed that
6:43
what have you noticed with how he's
6:45
facility yeah again yeah I agree with
6:47
you I think it's a great question again
6:49
you know it's you
6:51
know the difference between myself
6:54
obviously not at the level of Elliott
6:56
but my sophomore year to my junior year
6:59
you
7:00
um being familiar being comfortable
7:02
you're right the game is slowed down for
7:04
him on both ends of the floor he's been
7:06
fantastic defensively his leadership off
7:09
the court his example his hard work over
7:11
the summer but what he sees out there
7:14
offensively it slowed down for him you
7:16
know I felt like last year at times the
7:20
defense would dictate what he did on the
7:21
offensive end and that's not the case
7:23
anymore he dictates it doesn't matter
7:25
how the defense plays us or plays him um
7:29
he knows knows where he wants to go he
7:30
knows where the ball needs to go and he
7:32
feels very confident and comfortable
7:34
being able to do it when it comes to K
7:37
Tyson through those first couple
7:38
exhibition games what have you observed
7:40
from him as far as his I guess the
7:42
process of him getting acclimated you
7:44
know within the offense and within the
7:46
team and also just the I guess his
7:48
process of you know kind of getting more
7:49
comfortable out there on the court with
7:51
yeah I mean you know Kate is a a
7:53
basketball player you know he's you know
7:56
6'8 and he can really shoot the
7:58
basketball which um that really helps
8:02
our team but he's an excellent
8:04
rebounder um he's really uh been great
8:08
in terms of trying to get a second
8:09
chance opportunities but even if he
8:11
doesn't get the offensive rebound he's
8:12
really good at like keeping the ball
8:13
alive and tipping it out and so his
8:16
ability to run the floor he can handle
8:18
the basketball so he can score off the
8:20
bounds um he feels comfortable being
8:22
able to post up so I see you know like
8:25
you know his not his role but his
8:28
ability on the offense been just to
8:30
continue to grow every game and he's
8:32
feeling more comfortable out there on
8:33
the floor but he's he's been everything
8:35
that we have wanted him to be and even
8:37
more do you feel he's kind of you know
8:39
figured out that balance of you know
8:41
when to you know kind of get his shots
8:43
and when not to it seems like at times
8:45
you know maybe he does you know maybe
8:47
pass up a three things like that you
8:48
think he's kind of figuring that balance
8:49
out well I think it's you know when
8:51
you're always you know changing teams it
8:54
there's always a transition and you're
8:57
trying to you know get comfortable and I
9:00
think at sometimes you know you you're
9:03
coming in as a new player and you see
9:06
established players like Seth and RJ and
9:08
Jay wash excuse me and you want to fit
9:11
in and I I've told all the 10 new
9:15
players like I don't need you to try to
9:17
fit in the the team will fit in around
9:19
you like we're not asking you to be a
9:22
role player we're not asking you to play
9:23
a role we're asking you to be the best
9:25
player that you could become so whatever
9:27
you have in your bag bring it out and
9:29
the team will adjust to you and so
9:31
that's by been been my communication to
9:33
Kade and and everyone else Heber with
9:36
with Elliot have did you guys work with
9:39
anything mechanically on his jump shot
9:41
during the summer it to my eyes it
9:43
looked maybe a little smoother in motion
9:45
than it had points last year yeah I mean
9:47
you know one of the things
9:49
um from his jump shot last year just
9:52
working on his balance you know I I you
9:55
know that's the foundation point of
9:57
shooting is just having good having a
9:58
good bit and he really worked hard on
10:00
that being balanced on his shot um his
10:03
follow through was really good but I
10:06
think it's something that he looked at
10:08
this summer and and really wanted um to
10:11
make it even better but he's also spent
10:14
a ton of time in the gym I mean I I
10:16
can't remember a time being on the court
10:19
and Elliot not being there or any of our
10:22
workouts are practices him not getting
10:25
extra shots before or after practice we
10:28
have practice at 3:30 today we have team
10:30
pitcher at three he'll be out there soon
10:31
as after a team pitcher he starts
10:33
shooting shots he's out there with Coach
10:34
Paige every day and then after practice
10:37
he is shooting so um there is a reason
10:41
that he's feel more comfortable from the
10:42
perimeter because he's putting in a Time
10:45
given the Magnificent season that R.J
10:48
had last year and he's so experienced uh
10:51
his fifth season has your message to him
10:54
just individually been any different
10:57
going into this season
11:00
compared to last year as he was having
11:02
such a such a great year is there any
11:04
are you telling him any any different
11:06
type of stuff going into this year the
11:08
only thing differently that I told him
11:10
this year compared to last year was that
11:12
him and I think I've said this to you
11:15
guys well for him being a fifth year
11:17
senior first team All-American he could
11:19
really take a position apart from the
11:21
team because of his of his success here
11:25
and I felt like you know for him would
11:28
have be huge for our team team was I if
11:30
he would be a connector with the 10 new
11:33
guys reaching out to and becoming you
11:35
know developing relationships with the
11:37
Ws The Freshman um the
11:40
transfers and he has done that he has
11:43
been our connector his relationships
11:45
with all the new players has really
11:49
bound our team together to bring us
11:52
really great chemistry and it's because
11:54
of him last year we had Armond Cormac
11:57
Harrison pack
12:00
this year it's RJ and so it it's more of
12:03
a load for him but I felt like to bring
12:05
our team together I felt like RJ had to
12:07
be the one had to be the connector and
12:09
he's done a really good job of that but
12:11
that's the only difference in my
12:12
communication with him this year
12:14
compared to last time for two more quick
12:16
ones just to follow up real quick and
12:17
that's that's off the court stuff that's
12:19
off the court stuff but that helps on
12:21
the court sure you know and that helps
12:24
Kate feel more comfortable or vin or our
12:27
walk ons or Ian and Drake JB because wow
12:30
here's
12:32
just first team all- americ who had a
12:35
historic year and he's taking me out to
12:38
lunch he's taking me out to breakfast
12:40
he's talking to me during practice he's
12:43
my teammate and I feel involved and I
12:46
think that just goes a long way in how
12:48
we play on the court but it's also goes
12:50
a long way in the locker room there AR a
12:51
lot of teams that have a guy with jwt's
12:53
experience that would come off the bench
12:55
assuming who comes off the bench and
12:56
he's talked about that what kind of
12:59
values at having an old guy like him who
13:01
experienced some of the interesting
13:02
things he has in his career and fully
13:04
Embraces coming in and doing some of the
13:06
lunch pil stuff that he says he enjoys
13:08
doing yeah he is I mean he's obviously
13:11
has a lot of experience and I think
13:14
experience goes a long way
13:16
especially um during this time you need
13:19
guys that have been there before been
13:21
through different situations to allow
13:24
them to be uh put in situations where
13:26
they can be successful you know I you
13:29
know you talk about you know the growth
13:31
of Seth and Elliott and talking about RJ
13:35
and Cade one of the guys that hasn't
13:38
been talked about is is is Jay wit I
13:41
mean he's he's been really good in
13:44
practice I mean he's been an
13:46
encourager um the way that he is Led um
13:49
in the locker room on the court but just
13:51
what he's doing on the court we don't
13:54
have we don't have a 69 outside of him
13:58
athletic versatile Defender that can run
14:00
the floor that can shoot threes that can
14:02
attack the basket at his length in
14:04
athleticism and uh when he's playing at
14:07
a high level he's a game changer for us
14:09
and he knows that and I think being here
14:12
in his second year he feels more
14:13
comfortable and again I just I think
14:15
it's just a natural growth of being here
14:17
for a second year understanding me being
14:20
around me for two years as opposed to
14:22
one year and um he looks more
14:26
comfortable and more confident this year
14:30
than he was anytime last year and that
14:32
puts a huge smile on my face coach thank
14:35
you very much
