0:00
schedule has offered you guys a lot of
0:01
time for film and practice what have
0:04
been your main takeaways from all of
0:06
that and and what you've learned about
0:08
the elite level required when you go to
0:11
Hawaii and and play there and then play
0:13
in the Maui initation um probably the
0:15
first thing that I've talked about is uh
0:17
consistency in terms of discipline and
0:19
details you know it's
0:23
um we have shown signs of playing great
0:27
defense and being efficient on the
0:28
offensive end and it's it's it's about
0:31
starting there and staying at that level
0:34
and you just have to do it and so
0:36
building habits consistency playing at
0:39
that Elite level uh defensively
0:43
rebounding taking care of the basketball
0:45
and dominating points in the paintting
0:47
so those are things that we talk about
0:48
daily and those are things not just in
0:51
regards to this upcoming week or week
0:53
and a half but for the whole year that's
0:55
just going to be important for us just
0:58
tightening the screws on the distance
1:00
and details and diving into that by the
1:02
way um I forgot to tell you Jaylen
1:04
Washington is the player that will come
1:05
in after Hubert if you want to ask J
1:06
wash is
1:10
coming
1:11
screaming oh yeah he did a chest
1:15
too nice why did you think it was uh
1:18
valuable to play an additional game in
1:19
Hawaii um at the University of Hawaii
1:22
before uh playing in
1:25
Maui well I mean the schedule's already
1:28
set so um but it's an opportunity to
1:31
compete it's an opportunity to play and
1:35
um getting on that time zone I think is
1:38
important for us and um when I was
1:40
assistant for coach Williams prior
1:44
to uh the Maui Invitational we always
1:47
played either on the west coast whether
1:49
it's in California or the last time I
1:51
think it was 2017 we were in Honolulu so
1:55
this is something that's been done
1:57
before I believe you said you don't
1:59
really like tournaments where you play
2:01
three successive
2:02
days will you be playing in those after
2:05
this season I haven't said that I I
2:08
don't like it I I've never said that I
2:10
don't like it um it's an honor and a
2:13
privilege to play in in mile
2:15
Invitational it's uh it's a tournament
2:19
not only have I uh coached in as an
2:22
assistant coach but it's also a
2:23
tournament that I played in as a player
2:25
and I have tremendous memories from that
2:28
and so again and it it really is a
2:31
blessing and an honor to be a part of
2:33
such a prestigious uh tournament that
2:35
has a lot of history especially in
2:38
regards to our program and we're really
2:40
excited about the opportunity so you in
2:42
the future you plan to play more of
2:44
these tournaments with three success I
2:47
don't that's a great question my head is
2:50
not thinking there in terms of what
2:53
we're going to do in the future you know
2:55
my mind is is really on the preparation
2:58
for Hawaii
3:00
um but I'm open to anything youber
3:03
what's what's the balance that you try
3:05
to strike when you get to do cool things
3:08
like this as a team like going to Hawaii
3:11
being out there for a week obviously I
3:13
remember being in the Bahamas last year
3:15
and the guys were going on like the
3:16
water slides and stuff and the casino
3:18
was you know Roy was in there uh like
3:22
what is the balance you try to strike
3:23
where you have these high level
3:25
opponents well he has more time in his
3:27
hands so it's true there's some other
3:29
guys in there too but it's fine uh where
3:31
you have these high level opponents but
3:33
you also have like a cool experience to
3:35
sort of take part in no it is um I
3:39
think also playing in in tournaments
3:42
like this it gives our kids an
3:44
opportunity to be able to experience
3:45
something that one they may never be
3:47
able to experience again and two they
3:49
never even thought that they would be
3:51
able to experience so to to go to
3:53
Honolulu and go to Maui that's something
3:55
that our guys have never thought about
3:58
and dreamed about so giving them
4:00
opportunities and being able for them to
4:02
experience things that they've never
4:04
experienced before is something that
4:06
really brings joy to my heart and
4:08
obviously we're out there um to compete
4:11
and to win and to become a better
4:13
basketball team but there's also time
4:16
there to spend time together as a team
4:19
um um enjoy time together um on the road
4:24
and uh be able to experience uh
4:26
different places and I just think it's a
4:28
lot of fun the things that I remember
4:29
for for the rest of my life I remember
4:30
my time in Maui um my sophomore year and
4:34
waking up at 6:00 in the morning so
4:37
coach Guth took us on this bike ride we
4:40
had to go to the top of the
4:42
mountain and then we rode the bike all
4:46
the way down when we started it was
4:48
pitch dark by the time that we got down
4:50
to the bottom it was you know bright and
4:55
it was hilarious I sounds dangerous
4:59
about it at 54 yeah it
5:02
does but at 20 I was like yeah this is
5:05
pretty
5:07
cool I don't know I don't know why we
5:10
did that I don't know why we had to wake
5:11
up at 5: in the morning to go ride bikes
5:13
but so coach Smith wasn't there coach
5:16
Smith wasn't there it was coach Guth
5:17
coach gthd always did the excursions
5:20
things yeah that was that your first
5:22
trip to your sophomore first time you'd
5:24
ever been uhhuh yeah what was the whole
5:26
experience like whole experience was uh
5:30
the
5:32
um the first game we were down nine with
5:35
a minute to go against James Madison and
5:37
King Rice hit a leaner floater Bank to
5:41
win it then we beat Villanova in the uh
5:46
semi-finals and then we played Missouri
5:48
in the championship game and I was 0 for
5:50
10 and we lost what a why kind of what
5:53
you expected from probably your ideal of
5:57
why before you there yeah it was I mean
5:59
I yeah it really was I mean it's
6:01
beautiful the people are terrific and to
6:04
be able to see water in the beach as
6:06
clear as that was was was a really um
6:09
cool experience you guys outrebounded
6:11
Kansas in their building and you doubled
6:13
up American the other night are you
6:15
pleased with the direction you guys are
6:17
headed on the
6:19
glass yes um I you know I I've been
6:23
straight forward and direct that we got
6:24
to be a great rebounding team you know
6:27
and we want to dominate the boards on
6:29
both things not just defensive
6:30
rebounding percentage but also on the
6:32
offensive glass as well yes that was
6:35
good that we outrebounded uh Kansas we
6:37
outrebounded a bigger team in in Elon
6:40
and then we were able to dominate the
6:41
boards against American um that's huge
6:44
Force I've been straightforward and
6:46
direct that you know the number one
6:48
determining factor in outcome of game is
6:50
rebounding the basketball and so for us
6:52
to rebound that way in the direction
6:54
that we're going is something that we
6:56
stress and talk about every day and how
6:57
important it is for the success of this
6:59
team Drake had 11 the other night he
7:01
looks like a guy that's gon to be a high
7:03
volume rebounder the way he plays what
7:05
is it about him that kind of lead you to
7:07
believe that he's going to be one of
7:08
those kind of guys to well I mean
7:10
fundamentally he's sound so he's always
7:12
boxing out and you know he has the
7:14
athleticism and the length to be able to
7:16
go get it and also the drive to be able
7:18
to do it I think he can be one of the
7:22
best if not the best rebounding guard
7:24
ever in Carolina history once he
7:26
consistently goes to the offensive glass
7:28
I think he can be a a great offensive
7:30
rebounder and so um 11 rebounds is
7:33
something that wasn't surprising to me
7:35
that he got against American and is
7:37
something that we need for him moving
7:38
forward do you have a update on Ian
7:41
Jackson James Brown they practiced
7:43
yesterday practiced yesterday you kind
7:44
of anticipate they'll be good to go um
7:47
for Hawaii yeah I anticipate them but
7:49
they they did they practiced fully
7:51
yesterday gber with the setup in Maui
7:54
being like it is with three games in
7:56
three days do you sort of treat this
7:59
like you would with you know an ACC
8:00
tournament run or an NCAA tournament run
8:02
as far as just practice and Logistics
8:04
and scouting things like that yeah I
8:06
mean it's a a little bit different than
8:08
the NCAA tournament in regards to you
8:10
know it's two and then you get another
8:11
week if you are fortunate enough to
8:14
advance um
8:17
um but you know it's basketball we're
8:21
playing three games in three days
8:23
against great competition and um one of
8:26
the things that I like about this team
8:28
is the versatility in the depth
8:30
especially playing three games in three
8:32
days and so um I'm hopeful that that'll
8:34
help us be fresh um whomever we play and
8:38
so um but the approach is to take it one
8:41
game at a time uh obviously our mind is
8:45
fully um on Hawaii and um after we play
8:48
them then we'll focus on the next
8:51
game is there a common threat or reason
8:54
for close starts that you've seen for at
8:58
least three games this season yeah
9:03
um no I
9:06
uh I think they've been slow both ways I
9:09
think it's been slow a little bit in
9:12
terms of the the Rhythm offensively but
9:15
I would say against Kansas we got off to
9:17
a pretty good start at the beginning of
9:18
the game and then it was after maybe
9:20
like the 10-minute Mark and that's when
9:22
things we we struggle defensively
9:24
getting stops and we would turn the ball
9:26
over on the offensive end so I wouldn't
9:27
say it was all three games again it goes
9:30
back to just um the consistency that
9:32
we're looking for playing at a high
9:34
level on both ends of the floor and
9:36
being able to get there and to be able
9:38
to stay there for a full 40 minutes this
9:41
year I know you were you know I about OT
9:43
the other day but it seems that you know
9:45
through three games he's kind of taken
9:47
you know more of a command I guess of of
9:49
the offense if you will as far as you
9:51
know kind of burning the show things
9:52
like that uh I guess to what extent have
9:55
you seen that I know he's a more
9:57
comfortable player at this point but how
9:58
have you seen him kind of you know
9:59
taking control in that way and just kind
10:01
of getting everybody involved and things
10:03
like that yeah you know well first of
10:05
all I I'm not the type of coach of you
10:08
know he's the one that controls the
10:10
offense he's the one that gets everybody
10:12
involved I I've said a number of times
10:14
the more playmakers that we have on the
10:16
floor that's good news for us and so we
10:18
have a number of Playmakers RJ Seth
10:21
Elliott uh Drake uh a number of guys
10:25
that have the ability to make plays and
10:28
so that's really benefit icial for us
10:30
but the play of Elliott um I'm just
10:32
really happy and and proud of I was
10:34
saying to my wife the other day you know
10:37
that's one of the best parts about this
10:41
job is to seeing guys grow and continue
10:44
like not just grow off the court but
10:46
also their growth on the court and just
10:48
to be able to see the difference and
10:50
level of confidence and awareness out
10:52
there on the floor of Elliott um is
10:55
really fun to see and it's fun to be a
10:57
part of and um I'm just really proud of
11:00
them for all the all the good things
11:02
that Drake does he's so versatile is
11:06
offense something that you talk to him
11:08
about because it looks like sometimes he
11:10
might pass up a shot or defer just being
11:13
unselfish and keeping the ball moving
11:14
like is that I mean he's obviously very
11:16
good defensively and all these other
11:18
things like do you talk to him about
11:19
offense do you try to maybe encourage
11:21
that from him I I my conversations with
11:25
all the players in regards to offenses
11:27
whatever in your bag I want you to be
11:29
able to use it I want you to be able to
11:32
use your gifts and talents out there on
11:33
the floor I don't I I don't recruit I
11:35
don't play I don't coach role players uh
11:39
we all we obviously we talk about what
11:41
are good shots what are bad shots what
11:43
are efficient shots um those are things
11:46
that are important to us to get a good
11:48
shot at every possession but I want
11:51
guys to be fast and free on the
11:54
offensive end and whatever is in your
11:57
bag I want you to be able to use it so
11:59
if you can shoot shoot it if you can
12:00
drive drive it if you can shoot a hook
12:03
shot from half court and make 50% of
12:06
those then do it
12:08
um the the question comes is that in
12:11
your bag is that something that I've
12:13
seen you practice and practice or
12:15
practice before and after practice but
12:17
um Drake has uh um the freedom to be
12:21
able um to do whatever he wants on the
12:25
offensive end because of two things one
12:28
of his skill level but number two of um
12:31
his ability to take really good shots we
12:33
get jayen here in a few minutes uh when
12:35
you think back to his path at this point
12:38
what you had to do with with the with
12:39
the knee injuries and everything else
12:41
and showing the patience he did to get
12:43
to get to where he is now is there a
12:45
Meer of Satisfaction Just seeing him out
12:47
there playing 25 30 minutes and seeing
12:50
his game Blossom and gaining that next
12:52
level of confidence in order to be able
12:54
to play that many minutes here yeah he's
12:56
gone through a lot I mean all the way
12:57
back to high school missing his senior
12:59
year I couldn't
13:01
imagine um having to miss your senior
13:03
year and then his freshman year wasn't
13:05
really cleared until halfway through uh
13:09
uh his freshman year and I remember the
13:11
first time we put him on the floor was
13:14
um in December and so being able to
13:17
watch him now uh be out there on the
13:19
floor for long periods uh um defend
13:23
rebound run the floor the really it's
13:27
the best I was joking about it but but
13:29
to see that emotion out of him that was
13:32
an emotion that came from yes he made
13:35
the basket but also look what I've gone
13:38
through and that's something that I've
13:41
said
13:43
before and maybe I'm taking this one too
13:46
far forward
13:49
but those are the tears that guys have
13:53
at senior night it's not because
13:56
everything went great I made every shot
13:59
I never turned the ball over I got every
14:02
rebound it's also the perseverance
14:05
through difficult and tough times that
14:07
have allowed you to get there and that
14:11
reaction that he had in the game against
14:13
American I think it was more than just
14:14
making a basket I thought it was him
14:17
being out there on the floor and all
14:18
that he has persevered and gone through
14:21
is he a guy
14:22
that needed to have conversations at
14:24
time dealing with this because that
14:27
first year he didn't really play he was
14:28
thrown into the going there against the
14:30
Virginia and Louisville but otherwise
14:31
didn't play much and then last year had
14:33
to show a lot of patience or he just
14:35
wired in a way where he h it well you
14:37
guys saw him haing well so he didn't
14:39
really need any extra U Love or or
14:42
encouragement or whatever no we spend I
14:44
mean I spent a ton of time with the
14:46
players and and relationships with them
14:48
and talking with them and um I think J
14:52
wash has always been about the process
14:55
and understood that it's going to take
14:57
time and that's that's something
14:59
especially now in college that you know
15:04
it's
15:05
harder for guys to be able to do and um
15:09
he really took advantage of that time
15:12
that he was out he took advantage of uh
15:15
practicing against Armando every day and
15:18
being able to watch him and how he
15:19
prepared how he played how he practiced
15:23
and he's getting that opportunity now
15:26
and I always tell the guys you know you
15:28
you are going to get an opportunity I
15:30
can't tell you when where how and the
15:32
manner which you're going to get it but
15:33
when you get it are you going to be
15:34
ready that's the question and JW Watch
15:38
has been ready time for one more before
15:40
we go to jayen is the JW Watch that you
15:42
see every day that we saw on Friday the
15:44
one that you see every day in practice
15:45
and what do you think are next steps for
15:47
him to in order to consistently perform
15:49
at this high level yeah he's always
15:51
laughing he's always joking around and
15:53
we joke around uh with each other and um
15:57
I also push them too
15:59
um
16:01
because as well as he's playing he has
16:04
more in the
16:06
tank and I want him to reach his full
16:09
potential here and he's an unbelievable
16:12
kid uh to be around him every day and to
16:16
be able to coach him but to have a
16:17
relationship with him is something that
16:19
I value um
16:21
tremendously we go get him thank you
16:23
coach
