Tar Heels in NBA: Barnes plays well in another Kings win; Anthony nets 12, hears back from Hubert Davis

By R.L. Bynum

Harrison Barnes keeps playing well and it’s never enough for the Sacramento Kings.

In a season-high 42 minutes, 43 seconds, Barnes collected 16 points, 11 rebounds and three steals in his sixth double-double of the season. But the Kings lost 117–110 at New Orleans for their sixth consecutive loss after winning their previous five.

Barnes’ step-back 3-pointer with 55 seconds left cut the lead to six and his three free throws with 18.4 seconds left sliced the Pelicans lead to four but the Kings could come no closer. Fifteen missed free-throw attempts were damaging for the Kings but those last-minute tries were Barnes’ only attempts in the game.

That was the most minutes Barnes has played in a regulation game since he played 42 minutes, 51 seconds and scored 21 points for Dallas against Philadelphia on April 8, 2018.

Fortunes are much better of late for Reggie Bullock’s New York Knicks. Bullock scored 12 points with three 3-pointers, three assists and two steals as the Knicks beat the Los Angeles Lakers 111–96 at home for their third consecutive victory. For the fourth consecutive game and 14th of the last 15, Theo Pinson didn’t play.

Cole Anthony also scored 12 points, adding three rebounds, three assists and a steal in 21 minutes, but his Orlando Magic absorbed a 120–97 home loss to San Antonio.

Since Hubert Davis became UNC’s head men’s basketball coach last week, Anthony has been trying to contact him and had mentioned that in press conferences and on social media. Anthony was on a podcast called “The TROSS” when he finally heard back from Davis, Yahoo! reported.

“Literally, Hubert Davis just DM’d me on Instagram,” Anthony said. “He said, ‘So happy you’re back playing. I heard you’ve been killing me on social. You’re my guy. Coming to see you play soon.’ ”

Cameron Johnson had 11 points, three 3-pointers, four assists and three steals in Phoenix’s 126–120 home win over Houston.

Danny Green and Coby White both scored six points.

Green added three rebounds and two assists in Philadelphia’s 113–95 victory at Dallas. White had two rebounds and two assists in Chicago’s 101–90 road loss to Memphis.
