Tar Heels in Summer League: Pinson, Sharpe play well but Theo’s Bucks win

By R.L. Bynum

Theo Pinson and Day’Ron Sharpe on Wednesday had the best games of any Tar Heels so far at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas as Sharpe’s Brooklyn Nets outlasted Pinson’s Milwaukee Bucks 97–91.

After Pinson, a veteran of three NBA seasons, played 34 minutes all of last season for the New York Knicks and scored two points, he has started both Bucks Summer League games, logging 55 minutes and scoring 21 for Milwaukee in the Summer League.

Wednesday, Pinson collected 13 points, six assists and five steals.

Sharpe played a productive 17 minutes with 11 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and one authoritative dunk.

“I love the close games. I live for those,” Sharpe said after the narrow victory. “On defense and offense, you’ve just got to lock in. I’m an energy guy. If you see me on the sidelines, I’m always hyped up.”

Sharpe said he takes pride in rebounding.

“I just have a knack for it,” Sharpe said. “I can’t really tell you my tricks and trades. I just find a way to get around them to try to see where the ball might go off.”

It was another tough shooting game for Cole Anthony, who 2 of 10 from the floor in Orlando’s 94–84 Wednesday loss to Cleveland and finished with four points, three rebounds and three assists. Rookie Magic point guard Jalen Suggs had 16 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

On Tuesday night, Isaiah Hicks had six points, six rebounds and a block in 12 minutes of the Los Angeles Clippers’ 86–66 loss to Portland.

Sterling Manley hasn’t played in Chicago’s first two games but the Bulls play again at 4 p.m. Thursday against Minnesota on NBATV.
