Tar Heels in Summer League: Anthony, Sharpe play well in victories

By R.L. Bynum

Cole Anthony wasn’t sharing the Orlando Magic’s backcourt with rookie Jalen Suggs for the first time during the NBA Summer League on Sunday and came through with his best game in Las Vegas.

In 22 minutes, Anthony collected 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists (against five turnovers) and two blocks in Orlando’s 89–76 victory over the Houston Rockets.

Suggs suffered a left thumb sprain during the Magic’s loss on Thursday to Boston and won’t play again in the Summer League.

“I didn’t come here to do anything else but get my rhythm and get ready for the season,” Anthony said. “I had the ball in my hands most of the night, so that helped. That definitely helped, so it was cool. It was an average game, honestly. It was not like I had an exceptional game or anything. But, you know, I did enough to help my team win.”

Anthony said that he is getting out of Summer League what he was seeking, and part of that is getting used to the system of first-year coach Jamahl Mosley.

“It’s the practices,” Anthony said. “I mean the games are fun, those are obviously cool to help me get a rhythm, but frankly I want to get accustomed to Coach Mosley’s system, build chemistry with my new teammates and my old teammates. It’s been a very productive week. It’s not like I came out here and played the best. But I just came out to get a rhythm, man. I don’t have to be in tip-top season form now. That’s for a month and a half from now, so that’s what I’m working for.”

Day’Ron Sharpe scored in double figures for the second time during the Summer League with 10 points, five rebounds and one assist in Sunday’s 104–100 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

Isaiah Hicks had his second consecutive eight-point game for the Los Angeles Clippers, this time in a 94–90 victory Sunday over Utah, the Clippers’ first Summer League victory. Hicks played 15 minutes and had two rebounds, one assist, two steals and a block.

After three games of watching the Chicago Bulls’ games, Sterling Manley finally played in the Bulls’ 96–91 Sunday win over Memphis. In six minutes, he had two points and a rebound.

After a productive first two games for the Milwaukee Bucks, Theo Pinson’s performance has tailed off in the last two games. On Friday, he was scoreless with two rebounds, an assist and a steal in a 91–64 loss to Minnesota and, on Sunday, he scored two points with a rebound and three assists in a 93–83 loss to Washington. Pinson has started every Bucks Summer League game.
