Few reliable details have leaked out from UNC’s Saturday scrimmage against Florida

Not many details have come out about Carolina’s closed exhibition Saturday at Florida, except for some highlights UNC posted Sunday evening.

There are various suggestions on social media about how the scrimmage came out but no reliable information has been released. The highlights came out after the official UNC men’s basketball Twitter account tweeted a few photos from the scrimmage in Gainesville, Fla., on Saturday.

Both the UNC and Florida programs agreed before the game not to release any statistical details from the scrimmage, including the score or individual point totals.

But, thus far, neither school has provided details from the game beyond the video and photos.

What we can see in the video is lots of perimeter shooting success from the Tar Heels.

The video shows a lot of highlights for sophomore guard RJ Davis, who is shown making a pair of 3-pointers and a few other shots. Graduate forward Brady Manek and sophomore guard Caleb Love each are shown notching three 3-pointers, junior center Armando Bacot has one 3-pointer in the video and freshman guard D’Marco Dunn has one 3.

The video of the scrimmage inside of an empty arena is a reminder of how it was all of last season. But, of course, arenas will be filled with fans this season.

They used to call these scrimmages between Division I programs “secret scrimmages,” but the term isn’t as valid these days because word of the scrimmages always gets out. In this case, though, details of the game have largely been secret.

UNC didn’t have a closed scrimmage last season but did scrimmage against Villanova in 2018 and 2019. This preseason, the Wildcats met Duke in a closed scrimmage Saturday in Washington, D.C., with a 20 minute period and a 10-minute period.

After those UNC scrimmages against Villanova, Carolina released details unlike this year.

UNC coach Hubert Davis was in Orlando on Friday to watch Cole Anthony for the Magic’s home opener and the team held a practice at the Orlando Magic’s facility.

The Tar Heels face Division II Elizabeth City State in a 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 exhibition (ACC Network) and open the season at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 at home against Loyola of Maryland (ACC Network).
