Tar Heels in NBA: Sharpe puts up season-high numbers for short-handed Nets; Johnson hits 12 in Suns win

By R.L. Bynum

What will it take to give Day’Ron Sharpe a chance to show what he can do in the NBA on a deeply talented Brooklyn Nets team?

Evidently, it requires the team to be down to eight available players.

In Brooklyn’s 131–129 home overtime victory over the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday, Sharpe played a season-high 13 minutes, scoring a season-high seven points and pulling down a season-high-tying seven rebounds.

He also had an impressive block (play No. 3 in the below video).

In addition to Joe Harris (left ankle surgery) being out, the Nets were without James Harden, Jevon Carter, LaMarcus Aldridge, James Johnson, DeAndre’ Bembry and Paul Millsap because they were in the NBA’s health-and-safety protocols.

During one first-half stretch, Sharpe had six rebounds in five minutes. He didn’t play in the fourth quarter or overtime.

Before the season, Coach Steve Nash said that Sharpe would play some games with the G League’s Long Island Nets because of the lack of available playing time for him in Brooklyn. In four G League games, he’s averaging 18 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 1.4 steals.

Cameron Johnson extended his career-high streak of double-figure scoring games to seven with 12 points and eight rebounds in Phoenix’s 111–107 victory at Portland.

Nassir Little, in his third consecutive start for the Trail Blazers, had three points, five rebounds, a steal, a block and an assist.
