Tar Heels in NBA: White scores 20, part of NBA history with big late assists on consecutive nights for streaking Bulls

By R.L. Bynum

Coby White scored 20 points Saturday night and was part of NBA history in the Chicago Bulls’ seventh win in a row.

For the second consecutive night on the road, White assisted on a buzzer-beating, game-winning DeMar DeRozan 3-pointer, this time in a 120–119 win Saturday at Washington.

That was the first time in NBA history that a player has hit game-winning, buzzer-beating shots on consecutive nights. With the timing of it, though, the wins came in separate years. The only other player to do it in consecutive games was Larry Bird in 1985.

White threw an inbound pass from the left sideline with 3.3 seconds left and DeRozan hit a contested 3 from the left corner. The night before, White dove for a loose ball and passed to DeRozan before his 3 at the buzzer won the game at Indiana.

It all came in one of White’s best defensive games of the season as he continues to play with confidence. He collected 20 points, two rebounds, five assists and a steal for his third game in the last six with at least 20 points and fourth this season. He scored in double figures for a season-high fourth consecutive game.

White played a season-high 37 minutes, scoring 10 points in each half, notching four 3-pointers for his fourth consecutive game with at least three.

White led the Bulls with eight points and two assists when they outscored the Wizards by 10 points in the third quarter.

White picked up his third and fourth fouls (the second one on a questionable blocking call) in the fourth quarter but stayed aggressive in the passing lanes and his hustle led to passes being deflected.

With 3:16 left and Chicago trailing by three, White moved like a defensive back across the baseline to intercept a pass near the basket that would have otherwise led to an easy Wizards layup.

White’s scoring average is up to a season-high 10.4 per game. He put up a 16.5 game score and has three consecutive double-digit game score games for the first time since a four-game streak in late April of last season.
