Tar Heels in NBA: Bullock playing best basketball of season as Mavericks win; bigger role likely for Johnson with Booker injury

By R.L. Bynum

With Luka Dončić (calf injury) out for the first three games of their first-round series with the Utah Jazz, Reggie Bullock has produced the best playoff efforts of his career for the Dallas Mavericks.

Bullock collected 12 points, six rebounds and three assists in 44 minutes Thursday as the Mavericks won Game 3 of their first-round series with the Jazz 126–118 in Utah to take a 2–1 lead. He has three 3-pointers in each of the three games.

“I just told the guys we haven’t done anything,” Dallas coach Jason Kidd said. “They won at our place and now we won here. We need to put this game behind us and figure out what we need to do better.”

Bullock’s 13.1 game score was the best of his 12 career playoff games, topping the 12.3 in Game 1. His 11.9 in Game 2 is only bettered by the 12.2 for New York against Atlanta in Game 1 of a first-round series last season.

Bullock has scored in double figures and put up double-figure game scores in all three games. He last did both in three consecutive games in early February.

All of his playoff numbers are better than his regular-season numbers: 12.7 points vs. 8.6, 52.2% shooting vs. 40.1%, 47.4% shooting from 3-point range vs. 40.1%, 100% from the free-throw line vs. 83.3%, 5.3 rebounds vs. 3.5 and 2.7 assists vs. 1.2.

Jalen Brunson scored 31 points to lead Dallas.

Game 4 of the series in Utah is at 4:30 p.m. Saturday (TNT), and Dallas hopes Dončić will play in that game.

Another Tar Heel who will probably need to play well to compensate for a teammate’s injury is Cam Johnson. His Phoenix Suns teammate Devin Booker suffered a Grade 1 right hamstring strain and reportedly could miss two to three weeks.

Their series with the New Orleans Pelicans is tied at 1 as it shifts to New Orleans for the next two games, beginning with Game 3 at 9:30 Friday (ESPN).

Johnson, a finalist for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award, could be inserted into the starting lineup to match the Pelicans’ size but he could also continue to come off the bench if Coach Monty Williams opts to start Landry Shamet.

Shamet didn’t play in Phoenix’s 125–114 Tuesday Game 2 loss to New Orleans until Booker left the game with his injury.
