UNC men’s basketball will twice play 4 of the top 5 other ACC teams from last season

By R.L. Bynum

The ACC hasn’t yet released the men’s basketball schedule for next season but the league announced on Wednesday the league opponents for each conference school for the next three seasons.

As has been the tradition, UNC will play Duke and North Carolina State home and away in each of those three seasons.

Next season, the additional ACC opponents that the Tar Heels will meet home and away are Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Virginia and Wake Forest. UNC will only face Boston College, Clemson, Georgia Tech and Miami at home and only meet Florida State, Louisville, Syracuse and reigning ACC champion Virginia Tech on the road.

That means that UNC next season will face four of the top five other teams in last season’s ACC standings twice: the Blue Devils (16–4 in the ACC last season), Irish (15–5), Deacons (13–7) and Cavaliers (12–8). The Tar Heels meet two of the bottom three teams twice: the Wolfpack (4–16) and the Panthers (6–14).

It’s always been a challenge for UNC to play at Virginia and at Florida State. The Tar Heels will head to Charlottesville and Tallahassee in each of the next two seasons, then won’t have to make either road trip in the 2024–25 season.

For the 2023–24 season, UNC faces Clemson, FSU, Miami and Syracuse home and away. The Heels only meets Louisville, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest at home and only faces BC, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh and Virginia on the road.

In the 2024–25 season, Carolina takes on BC, Georgia Tech, Louisville and Virginia Tech home and away, FSU, Pitt, Syracuse and Virginia at home and Clemson, Miami Notre Dame and Wake Forest on the road.

In other scheduling news, College Hoops Today’s Jon Rothstein reported Wednesday that sources tell him that UNC will be in the 2023 Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas with Villanova, Arkansas, Michigan, Memphis, Oklahoma, Stanford and Northern Iowa.
