Tar Heels in NBA: Lakers reportedly among teams seeking Green; Thunder waives Jackson; Bullock stays hot; Kessler hits 23

By R.L. Bynum

Danny Green is with Houston after the Rockets acquired him in a trade-deadline deal with Memphis on Thursday, but it appears unlikely that he’ll be there long. Justin Jackson’s stay with Oklahoma City Thunder lasted less than 24 hours as the Thunder waived him Friday.

In Friday games, Reggie Bullock scored 13 points and his 800th career 3-pointer as Dallas beat Sacramento 122–114, and rookie Walker Kessler netted a season-high 23 points in Utah’s 122–116 win at Toronto.

Green reportedly wants Houston to waive him, or he could have his contract bought out. The Los Angeles Lakers, Cleveland and Boston are reportedly among the possible landing spots as teams covet Green’s 3-point shooting prowess, defensive skills and leadership qualities.

Should the Lakers sign Green, he would reunite with LeBron James after being part of the 2020 NBA champions for Green’s third NBA title.

“Danny Green is the interesting player in Houston,” Adrian Wojnarowski said in an appearance Friday on ESPN’s “NBA Today.” “I’m told that he would like to be waived just like John Wall is being waived, and not have to do a buyout. Teams like Boston, Cleveland, Los Angeles, they have great interest in him.”

Memphis dealt Green to Houston as part of a three-team trade, with Eric Gordon going from the Rockets to the Los Angeles Clippers and former Duke guard Luke Kennard moving from the Clippers to the Grizzlies.

Green had played only three games for the Grizzlies following his season debut on Feb. 1. That game ended his long recovery from tearing the ACL and LCL in his left knee while playing for the Philadelphia in last season’s playoffs. Green scored nine points and three 3-pointers in 43 minutes over three games for Memphis.

It’s not clear what the options are for Jackson. Boston dealt him to Oklahoma City on Thursday, along with two second-round picks, in return for center Mike Muscala. Friday, to make room on the Thunder’s roster to sign Eugene Omoruyi, the team waived Jackson.

Jackson got limited playing time for Boston, logging 107 minutes over 23 games, scoring 20 points and five 3-pointers. He played 33 games for Oklahoma City in the 2020–21 season, averaging 7.2 points per game.

Bullock has started three consecutive games since Dallas dealt Dorian Finney-Smith to Brooklyn on Monday, including the last two playing alongside former Duke guard Kyrie Irving, who the Mavs acquired in that deal.

Bullock had three 3-pointers to give him 801 for his career, along with five rebounds and two assists, against the Kings. Irving had 25 points and 10 assists as the Mavericks (31–26) won their third straight game despite being without Luka Dončić (right heel contusion) again.

In the last four games, Bullock is 15 of 29 from 3-point range (51.8%). Since New Year’s Day, Bullock is averaging 9.4 points per game and making 44.2% of his 3-point attempts. According to the Basketball Index, Bullock is in the 81st percentile for “on-ball perimeter defense” this season.

Bullock has double-digit game scores in three consecutive games for the first time this season after putting up a total of three double-digit game scores before New Year’s Day.

Theo Pinson continues to get consistent playing time. He had two points and two assists in 15 minutes, playing double-digit minutes in three consecutive games for the first time this season.

Harrison Barnes had eight points and four rebounds for the Kings (31–24), who are third in the Western Conference, one game ahead of Dallas.

Kessler’s big game helped the Jazz snap a three-game losing streak. It was the third game with at least 20 points this season for Kessler, who also pulled down nine rebounds.

Kessler produced a 21.6 game score, his fourth of at least 20 this season.

Nassir Little scored eight points and a pair of 3-pointers with five rebounds in Portland’s 138–129 home loss to Oklahoma City.

After missing several games in concussion protocol, Garrison Brooks returned to collect 10 points and eight rebounds in the G League Westchester Knicks’ 114–96 home loss Friday to Sioux Falls.
