Tar Heels in NBA: Barnes’ Kings win 176–175, White’s Bulls roll as both part of history-making wins

By R.L. Bynum

Neither Harrison Barnes nor Coby White had their best games on Friday night, but both were on the right side as their teams made NBA history.

Barnes scored 11 points on a tough shooting night, but his Sacramento Kings outlasted the host Los Angeles Clippers 176–175 in double overtime. It was the second game in league history with both teams scoring at least 170 points.

The only other time that happened, on Dec. 13, 1983, Detroit needed three overtimes to beat Denver 186–184. The Kings’ point total was the third-highest in NBA history and the Clippers’ total was the fourth-highest, as seven teams in NBA history have now scored at least 170 points in a game.

Barnes made all eight free-throw attempts and had six rebounds, two assists and two steals but was only 1 of 6 from the floor, making 1 of 4 3-point attempts.

White only had five points in Chicago’s 131–87 home victory over the Brooklyn Nets to end the Bulls’ six-game losing streak. But he was part of the largest margin of victory in NBA history to snap a single-season losing skid of at least six games.

With the win, the Bulls (27–33) moved 1½ games back of the 10th and final play-in spot in the Eastern Conference.

Conversely, Cameron Johnson and Day’Ron Sharpe were on the other end of that outcome, which was Brooklyn’s largest margin of defeat this season.

Johnson was 4 of 13 from the floor and scored 10 points, while Sharpe had two points, three rebounds, two assists and two blocks in 16 minutes.

Danny Green scored three points in 10 minutes for Cleveland in the Cavaliers’ 136–119 loss at Atlanta.

In the G League, Garrison Brooks collected 24 points, nine rebounds and three assists, but his Westchester Knicks lost to Fort Wayne 122–119.

Justin Jackson, who Oklahoma City released on Feb. 10, a day after acquiring him from Boston, is back with the G League’s Texas Legends, where he played last season.

In his first game with Texas, he scored 13 points in the Legends’ 123-122 Friday home win over Texas, with three 3-pointers and six rebounds.

He played 28 games for Texas last season, averaging 22.2 points per game and shooting 36.3% from 3-point range.
