Tar Heels in NBA: Johnson scores 15 points in Nets’ OT win to cap rough week, but reportedly stands to sign huge contract in offseason

By R.L. Bynum

During a rough week for Cameron Johnson, at least he helped Brooklyn get a hard-fought overtime victory on Friday.

After he missed the Nets’ Thursday 118–113 loss at Milwaukee with right knee soreness, he was back in the starting lineup for Brooklyn’s 124–123 overtime victory Friday at Minnesota.

He took a bloody route to scoring 15 points and three 3-pointers with eight rebounds. He was bleeding on the court after taking an inadvertent elbow to his face during the third quarter and briefly left the game for treatment before returning.

Johnson, who Phoenix traded to Brooklyn at the trade deadline along with Mikal Bridges, is set to be a restricted free agent and figures to sign a lucrative contract in the offseason.

He turned down a four-year, $72-million deal with the Suns, and the New York Post reports that sources indicate Johnson could command a contract that would earn him at least $18 million to more than $20 million per season.

Johnson’s coveted skills as a wing, with a lethal catch-and-shoot game, as well as his close relationship with Bridges, make re-signing him an offseason priority for the Nets.

“I’ve said this — because this was a topic of discussion when I didn’t sign the extension — that I’m still under contract at this moment,” Johnson told the New York Post. “I still had that year; I still have the rest of this year. And my goal right now is to win games and make a playoff push.”

Brooklyn is sixth in the Eastern Conference at 38–29, with a 2½-game lead over Miami to avoid the play-in tournament.

After Day’Ron Sharpe contributed 11 points and four rebounds in the Nets’ loss at Milwaukee, he didn’t play (coach’s decision) against Minnesota.

Harrison Barnes had 10 points and three rebounds in Sacramento’s 122–117 home win Thursday over New York that pushed the Kings to 39–26, tied with the Memphis Grizzlies for second in the Western Conference.

Walker Kessler put up his 16th double-double of the season with 13 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks in Utah’s 131–124 victory Thursday at Orlando. Cole Anthony had six points on a pair of 3-pointers for the Magic.

Reggie Bullock missed Dallas’ 113–106 Wednesday loss at New Orleans with a right quad contusion, but is listed as probable for Saturday’s game at Memphis. Theo Pinson played three scoreless minutes against the Pelicans.

Danny Green continues to ride the Cleveland bench. He didn’t play (coach’s decision) as the Cavaliers split two games at Miami on Wednesday and Friday. Since joining Cleveland, he’s only played in four of nine games.

Nassir Little scored three points in 24 minutes in Portland’s 115–93 Wednesday loss at Boston and played nine scoreless minutes in Friday’s 120–119 loss at Philadelphia.

Coby White collected seven points and four rebounds in Chicago’s 117–96 Wednesday win at Denver.

In the G League, Justin Jackson scored 18 points and three 3-pointers with five rebounds and five assists in his Texas Legends’ 122–110 Wednesday home loss to Windy City. In Thursday’s 135–110 home loss to Windy City, he had 10 points, five rebounds and six assists.
