Tar Heels in NBA: White perfect from floor, has nine points, five assists as Bulls advance; four other UNC alums open playoffs Saturday

By R.L. Bynum

Coby White scored all nine of his points in the second quarter as the Chicago Bulls became the first No. 10 seed to win a play-in tournament, rallying from a 19-point second-half deficit to win 109–105 Wednesday night at No. 9-seed Toronto.

The other four UNC alums in the postseason play their playoff openers on Saturday.

Chicago advanced to play at Miami at 7 p.m. Friday (TNT) for the right to face No. 1 Eastern Conference seed Milwaukee as the No. 8 seed. That first-round series would begin Sunday in Milwaukee.

Zach LaVine scored 39 points, and former Raptors player DeMar DeRozan added 23 for Chicago.

White made all four shots, one from 3-point range, in the second period, and finished with a postseason career-high five assists and one steal. He didn’t get off a shot in the other three quarters.

It was the sixth postseason game for White, whose best game was 17 points in a first-round loss to the Bucks in Game 5 of the playoffs last season.

After playing 9½ minutes in the second quarter and 14 in the first half, he only got in for 10:45 in the second half, including only 1 minute, 50 seconds in the fourth quarter. He came in for one offensive possession in the last minute but didn’t touch the ball.
