D’Marco Dunn becomes the seventh UNC player to transfer, leaving four returnees

By R.L. Bynum

Rising junior D’Marco Dunn on Thursday became the seventh player from last season’s North Carolina team to enter the transfer portal, according to multiple reports, leaving only four returning players.

One reason he may have decided to leave is the possible reclassification of Class of 2024 five-start point guard Eliot Cadeau to join the team next season. That decision would mean RJ Davis would shift to the two spot and fewer opportunities for Dunn to get playing time, with the competition already including Seth Trimble, transfer Cormac Ryan and incoming freshman Simeon Wilcher.

Today was the last day that players could enter the transfer portal.

Dunn’s transfer means that all three players in Coach Hubert Davis’ first signing class — Dunn, Dontrez Styles and Will Shaver — have all transferred.

The former four-star recruit averaged 7.4 minutes in the 50 games he played as a Tar Heel, scoring 96 points and shooting 48.9% from the floor.

He scored in double figures once, scoring 14 points and two 3-pointers last season in the 80–49 victory Jan. 14 at Louisville. He only played double-digit minutes 15 times, with his career-high of 26 minutes coming in that game against the Cardinals.

He follows Caleb Love (who is transferring to Michigan), Styles (Georgetown), Tyler Nickel (Virginia Tech), Justin McKoy (Hawaii), Puff Johnson (Penn State) and Shaver in deciding to transfer. Shaver, who initially committed to Belmont and subsequently reopened his recruitment, committed Thursday to UAB.

The only returning players from last season are Davis, Trimble, Jalen Washington and Armando Bacot.

Roster assuming all players with eligibility other than Caleb Wilson, Henri Veesaar and the seven players who entered the transfer portal return, which would put UNC two under the 15-player limit. The class for next season is listed.
