D’Marco Dunn will join Puff Johnson at Penn State

By R.L. Bynum

There will be half as many players from last season’s North Carolina roster playing for Penn State as will play for the Tar Heels.

Junior 6–5 guard D’Marco Dunn announced Thursday on social media that he will join fellow former UNC teammate Puff Johnson in transferring to Penn State. Dunn already has a profile page on the Penn State website.

Only four players from last season’s Carolina roster — fifth-year center Armando Bacot, sophomores Seth Trimble and Jalen Washington and senior RJ Davis — will be back from last season to play for the Tar Heels.

On May 11, Dunn became the seventh player from last season’s team to enter the transfer portal.

Mike Rhoades was named head coach at Penn State on March 29 after going 129–61 in six seasons at VCU. Before that, he was 47–52 in three seasons at Rice. He was 197–76 in 10 seasons before that at Randolph-Macon. Rhoades took over for Micah Strewsberry, who left to replace Mike Brey at Notre Dame.

“I chose Penn State for the opportunity to play for Coach Rhoades and an amazing school,” Dunn told On3. “I’ve known him and his staff and believe in what they are building. I’m excited to be a part of something special.”

Returning for Penn State are sophomore guards Jameel Brown (6–4) and Kanye Clary (5–11). Other guards transferring to play for the Nittany Lions are senior Ace Baldwin Jr. (6–1) and junior Nick Kern Jr. (6–6) from VCU and fifth-year player RayQuawndis Mitchell (6–5) from Missouri-Kansas City. In addition, there is incoming freshman guard Bragi Gudmundsson (6–5).

The former four-star recruit averaged 7.4 minutes in the 50 games he played as a Tar Heel, scoring 96 points and shooting 48.9% from the floor.

He scored in double figures once, scoring 14 points and two 3-pointers last season in the 80–49 victory Jan. 14 at Louisville. He only played double-digit minutes 15 times, with his career-high of 26 minutes coming in that game against the Cardinals.

The Nittany Lions went 23–14 last season and made the NCAA tournament. Penn State beat No. 17 Texas A&M 76–59 in the first round before losing to No. 5 Texas 71–66.
