Manek scores 13 to top good Summer League night for UNC alums, with teammates Black and Brooks playing each other

It was the best collective day for Tar Heels at the NBA Summer League, including former teammates playing each other.

Brady Manek had the best game Thursday with the most playing time in the Atlanta Hawks’ four games after not playing (coach’s decision) in the Hawks’ game on Wednesday.

Manek played 22 minutes, 15 seconds and collected 13 points and six rebounds, even though he made only one of five 3-point attempts, in helping Atlanta hold off Philadelphia 99–89 to move to 3–1.

In one of the more intriguing matchups from a Carolina blue perspective, Garrison Brooks had 10 points, four rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block as his New Orleans team (3–1) knocked off Leaky Black’s Charlotte team (0–6) 89–88.

It was Black’s best game, though, with eight points, two 3-pointers, eight rebounds and an assist in 16 minutes, 53 seconds, the most playing time since playing 16:55 in the Hornets’ opener in Sacramento on July 3.

Black didn’t play (coach’s decision) for three consecutive games after that opener before going scoreless in 13:12 in the Hornets’ 97–83 loss to Portland on Tuesday.

Brooks has played in all four Pelicans’ games, with his best previous scoring game was nine point in the 102–88 loss to Minnesota on Friday.

Pete Nance got the most playing time in four Summer League games for Cleveland (4–0) in the Cavaliers’ 87–83 Thursday win over Chicago. In 26:33, he contributed eight points, five rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block.

Nance’s only game scoring in double figures was 11 in the 99–76 Sunday victory over Toronto.

The top four teams advance to the tournament, with the semifinals Sunday and the championship Monday. Cleveland has clinched a spot, and both New Orleans and Atlanta have a chance to make the field. There will be six additional games on Sunday involving teams that didn’t make the tournament.
