Okonkwo dishes out team-high four assists; Great Britain drops finale

Although UNC transfer James Okonwko struggled to score in Great Britain’s FIBA U20 European Championships Division B finale, he showed off his passing skills.

After collecting only three assists in the first six games, the 6–8, 240-pound former West Virginia player dished out a team-high four assists as the British team lost to Switzerland 82–73 in its final consolation-bracket game in Skopje, North Macedonia.

Okonkwo only made two of nine shots and scored a tournament-low four points while pulling down single-digit rebounds for only the second time in seven games with eight. He blocked one shot to give him 15 for the tournament after he blocked a team-high 22 shots last season for the Mountaineers.

He had an early layup, and his jump shot three minutes into the game gave Great Britain a 6–5 lead. The British team (2–5) led 20–17 before the game was tied at 22 entering the second quarter, and the Swiss (4–3) led 47–41 at halftime. Great Britain trailed the entire second half.

Okonkwo will finally visit the UNC campus for the first time. A few days before committing to Carolina on July 6, he set an official visit for late this month.

Okonkwo shot 57.4% from the floor last season for West Virginia. He played 340 minutes in 31 games and scored 42 points.
