Carolina’s men’s basketball team will face Northern Iowa in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis, which is set for Nov. 22–24 at Paradise Island, Bahamas, with a possible Thanksgiving Day matchup against Villanova.
The Tar Heels will be in the same bracket of the eight-team event with the Villanova-Texas Tech game. On the other side of the bracket, Michigan takes on Memphis and Arkansas meets Stanford.
Carolina plays in the initial first-round game on Nov. 22 at noon (ESPN) at the Imperial Arena. The Tar Heels would then play on Nov. 23, Thanksgiving Day, against Villanova or Texas Tech in a noon semifinal game with a first-round victory (ESPN) and or at 5 p.m. (ESPN2) with a first-round loss.
The championship game is on Nov. 24 at 3:30 p.m. (ESPN). Carolina will play all three days regardless of the outcome.
Northern Iowa went 14–18 last season, losing to Bradley in the second round of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament.

UNC last played the Panthers in the opener of the 2017–18 season with an 86–69 home victory. Carolina beat Northern Iowa 85–42 at home on Dec. 21, 2016. In Marcus Paige’s homecoming game, when he couldn’t play because of injury, Northern Iowa beat UNC 71–67 on Nov. 21, 2015.
A matchup with Villanova on the event’s second day would be the first meeting since the Wildcats’ 77–74 victory over the Tar Heels in Houston at the 2016 Final Four but UNC leads the series 11–5. Villanova won its only other meeting with Texas Tech, 71-59, in an NCAA Elite Eight game in 2018.
The Wildcats went 17–17 last season in their first under head coach Kyle Neptune.
A Thanksgiving Day game against Texas Tech would mean that the Tar Heels would face former UNC guard Kerwin Walton. The Red Raiders went 16–16, losing to West Virginia 78–62 in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament.
Carolina has won two of three meetings with Texas Tech, but the Red Raiders won the last meeting 92–73 in the second round of the 1996 NCAA tournament.
