Chazz Surratt came into his third NFL season with a shot at finally getting playing time and he didn’t do anything to hurt his chances on Thursday night.
Surratt, who was on the New York Jets’ practice squad most of last season, had an interception and three tackles Thursday night in the Jets’ 21–16 loss to the Cleveland Browns in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio.
In the second quarter, Surratt watched the eyes of Browns quarterback Kellen Mond and made a beautiful play to snag an interception, returning it 13 yards down the left sideline to set up New York at the Cleveland 27. The Jets scored three plays later to take a 13–0 lead.
Surratt left the game before halftime with a hamstring issue.
He played nine games in his rookie season in 2021 with the Minnesota Vikings, all on special teams and played no defensive snaps. The Vikings waived him in camp last season before he signed to the Jets’ practice squad. He only got into one game last season for the Jets and had one tackle.
Surratt is battling C.J. Mosley and Quincy Williams for playing time at linebacker.
Michael Carter didn’t play in the game.
