The Athletic came out with its preseason Top 25 men’s basketball rankings Monday morning, with Kansas atop the list, with Marquette No. 2 and Duke No. 3.
When it came to assessing the rebuilt North Carolina team, writers CJ Moore and Sam Vecenie, rated the Tar Heels No. 18.
The last ESPN “Way-Too-Early Top 25” that came out on Aug. 1 had UNC No. 15 and Duke No. 2.
The Athletic notes that the Tar Heels’ strengths would be rebounding, interior scoring and creative guards. The story lists UNC’s question marks as perimeter size, the guard pairing of senior RJ Davis and freshman Elliot Cadeau, shooting and positional log-jams in the front court.
The story projects the starters to be Davis, Cadeau, Notre Dame transfer wing Cormac Ryan, Stanford transfer forward Harrison Ingram and fifth-year center Armando Bacot.
Other ACC teams in the Athletic’s Top 25 are Miami at No. 19 and Virginia at No. 25.
Non-conference Carolina opponents in its list are No. 5 Tennessee, No. 7 UConn (the reigning NCAA champion) and No. 16 Kentucky. No. 11 Villanova is a potential Battle 4 Atlantis opponent.
