Two highly touted members of Carolina’s five-player freshman class will redshirt this season.
Five-star stretch forward Ciera Toomey (top photo), the No. 4 player in the Class of 2023, and wing Laila Hull (bottom photo), last season’s Miss Basketball and Gatorade Player of the Year in Indiana, won’t play while they continue to rehabilitate high school injuries.
Both underwent surgery during the summer as part of their continued rehabilitation, and each will have four years of eligibility remaining.
“When any player that you are excited to coach redshirts, there is obviously an element of disappointment as their process is a bit delayed,” UNC coach Courtney Banghart said.
“But this decision also means that they get a year to rehab, build strength and better prepare for the collegiate game, so in many ways it’s a win,” Banghart said. “I’ve already been really inspired by the work ethic and dedication of both Ciera and Laila and am thrilled with their decision to get four full years with us on the court. I know we will continue to get their best as they work hard to return even stronger.”
It’s the second time in three seasons that two highly touted freshmen have redshirted for their first seasons in Chapel Hill. Two redshirt sophomores — forward Teonni Key and lead guard Kayla McPherson — missed the 2021–22 season recovering from knee injuries suffered in high school.

Carolina will still have plenty of depth in the frontcourt. Key (6–4), Alyssa Ustby (6–1), Anya Poole (6–2) and Alexandra Zelaya (6–4) are back from last season, center Maria Gakdeng (6–3) is a transfer from Boston College and forward RyLee Grays is a 6–3 freshman.
Toomey, from Dunmore, Pa., was Pennsylvania’s Miss Basketball as a senior, when she helped Dunmore to the 2023 state title after missing most of her senior season with a torn ACL.
Hull averaged 22.4 points per game as a senior and finished her high school career as Zionsville High’s all-time scoring leader.
