What is The CW, and how can you watch the UNC-Virginia football game?

By R.L. Bynum

When the ACC announced that No. 10 North Carolina’s Saturday night game against Virginia would air on The CW, that immediately confused some Tar Heels fans. Most have heard it but have no idea where to find it.

The CW is a national television network that launched in 2006, and is best known for shows such as “Gilmore Girls,” “The Vampire Diaries,” “Gossip Girl,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Star Trek: Voyager,” “7th Heaven,” “Dawson’s Creek,” “Charmed,” “Smallville,” “The Flash,” and “America’s Next Top Model.”

Play-by-play announcer Tom Werme, analyst James Bates and sideline reporter Treavor Scales will be on the call of the broadcast, which starts at 6:30 p.m., with the kickoff set for 6:37.

At least an earlier football game running long won’t delay UNC’s kickoff (or force fans to miss the start of the game) since it’s the only football game that will air Saturday on The CW. The network is scheduled to air second-round coverage of the LIV Golf League’s Miami tournament from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., but extended golf coverage seems less likely to lead to a later kickoff or fans missing any of the game.

The network airs one ACC football game every weekend (it has aired two N.C. State games) after taking over the package that, until last season, aired on regional sports networks such as Bally Sports Southeast.

The CW also will televise ACC basketball, including 23 men’s and nine women’s games. The only UNC men’s game on The CW is Jan. 20 at Boston College. Two Carolina women’s games will air on The CW: the Dec. 31 home game against Clemson and the Jan. 28 road game with Virginia.

There could be more Carolina football games that will air on The CW later in the season.

If your TV provider doesn’t offer The CW, your best bet is to use an antenna to get the game over the air or head to Kenan Stadium. If those aren’t options, you can always listen to the call from play-by-play announcer Jones Angell, analyst Brian Simmons and sideline reporter Lee Pace on the Tar Heel Sports Network.
