A group of color announcers will fill in on the Tar Heel Sports Network this season while longtime analyst Eric Montross battles cancer.

Joining play-by-play announcer Jones Angell on the network for the men’s basketball broadcasts will be former UNC stars Joel Berry II, Pete Chilcutt, Marcus Ginyard and Tyler Zeller.

Chilcutt worked Friday night’s radio broadcast of the 117–53 exhibition win over St. Augustine’s, and Ginyard provided the color for the ESPN3 streaming broadcast.

“I am thrilled Marcus, Pete, Joel and Tyler have agreed to be a part of the broadcast team this season,” Montross said. “Our THSN listeners will appreciate not only their deep knowledge and respect for the collegiate game and its players but also their unique personalities, senses of humor and personal experiences on the court, which will make for an exciting listening experience for younger fans as well as those who have been following the game for decades.”

Berry, Chilcutt, Ginyard and Zeller will rotate appearances as analysts.

“We will miss Eric tremendously on the broadcast this season, and he will constantly be in our thoughts,” Angell posted on X (formerly Twitter). “I am excited to work with these great Tar Heels this year!”

Montross, an analyst for the network’s men’s basketball broadcasts since he replaced Mick Mixon for the 2005–06 season, was diagnosed with cancer in March and began treatment. In a video played in the Smith Center on Oct. 13 during Live Action, he announced that he wouldn’t be part of the broadcasts this season.

“I am fighting, and will continue to fight every day,” Montross said in the video. “I will not be in person with you on the Tar Heel Sports Network this season. But know that, even if you don’t see me — and I know I’m hard to miss — I will be cheering on our Tar Heels during every single game.”

Berry played point guard for the Tar Heels from 2014 to 2018, leading them to a national championship in 2017, when he was named the Most Outstanding Player. He played two seasons in the G League and a season abroad before retiring in 2021, and is an ACC Network analyst.

Chilcutt played power forward at UNC from 1987 to 1991, leading the Tar Heels to two ACC titles and the 1991 Final Four. The Sacramento Kings picked him in the first round of the 1991 NBA Draft, and he played nearly a decade in the NBA for eight teams. Chilcutt won an NBA title in 1995 with the Houston Rockets.

Marcus Ginyard was a defensive standout for the Tar Heels from 2005 to 2010, starting on ACC title-winning teams in 2007 and 2008, and was a team leader in 2009 when Carolina won an NCAA championship. Following his college career, Ginyard spent more than a decade playing overseas.

Tyler Zeller was an All-America center at UNC from 2008 to 2012. The Tar Heels won a national championship in his freshman season in 2009, and he was the ACC Player of the Year and a consensus second-team All-America in 2012. The Dallas Mavericks’ first-round pick in 2012, he played eight seasons in the NBA.
