Tar Heels in NBA: Sharpe, Kessler score more than a point per minute; NBA fines struggling White; tough starts for Bullock, Little; Green waived

By R.L. Bynum

Day’Ron Sharpe made the most of his playing time as he and Walker Kessler each scored more than a point per minute on Monday night while Coby White’s tough stretch — which includes getting fined — continued.

Sharpe nearly had a double-double in 10 minutes with 11 points, eight rebounds, an assist and a block for a 9.0 game score in the Brooklyn Nets’ 133–121 victory at Charlotte, and is shooting 61.5% from the floor through three games.

Even with Nic Claxton, the usual Brooklyn starting center, out with an ankle sprain, Dorian Finney-Smith got the start over Sharpe at center. In 25 minutes this season, Sharpe has 17 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks.

The Nets’ Cameron Johnson missed his second consecutive game with a left calf contusion and is expected to be out another 10 days.

“I had hoped [he would be back], but reality set in a little bit,” Nets coach Jacque Vaughn said of Johnson. “We ended up getting an MRI, so we are just waiting on those results after the contusion just to be safe. We will reevaluate him in 10 days and see what he looks like from there.”

Leaky Black still hasn’t made his NBA debut for the 1–2 Hornets.

Roy Williams attended the game.

Kessler started in Utah’s 110–102 Monday loss at Denver, collecting 22 points, 13 rebounds and a block in 20 minutes, including five dunks in the third quarter, or a 20.1 game score. He might have played more, but he also had four fouls. He had eight game scores of at least 20 during his rookie season.

The big game came after Kessler had two points, five rebounds and a block in Saturday’s 126–104 loss at Phoenix.

White went scoreless in Chicago’s 118–102 Saturday loss at Detroit and had seven points in Monday’s 112–105 Bulls win at Indiana, combining to shoot 3 of 10 and collect only four assists in the two games.

But it was White’s flop on a Cade Cunningham crossover in Saturday’s game that cost him. The NBA fined him $2,000 for the play.

Cole Anthony had 12 points, three rebounds, two assists and three steals in Orlando’s 106–103 Monday road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Magic stay in L.A. to continue a West Coast trip with a game against the Clippers on Tuesday.

Harrison Barnes’ Sacramento Kings had better luck against the Lakers, winning an overtime game Sunday night at home 132–127. Barnes had eight points, two rebounds, two assists and a block in the game.

Since scoring 31 points on opening night at Utah, Barnes has combined for 18 in the two games since then.

Reggie Bullock, Danny Green and Nassir Little are off to slow starts with new teams, although Green joining the Philadelphia 76ers was a return for him. On Tuesday, the 76ers waived Green, according to ESPN, to open a roster spot after a trade sent James Harden to the Los Angeles Clippers.

Bullock was scoreless in six minutes of the Rockets’ 106–95 Sunday home loss to Golden State and has three points in just over 28 minutes over three games, shooting 1 of 5.

Green didn’t play (coach’s decision) in Sunday’s 126–98 home win over Portland after going scoreless in five minutes of Saturday’s 114–107 victory at Toronto. He was 0 of 2 from the floor in 18 minutes over two games played and didn’t score.

Little had six points in 21 minutes in the Suns’ Saturday win over Utah, and has only 11 points in three games.
