It’s going very well so far at Georgetown for Dontrez Styles.
The junior wing scored a career-high 26 points and three 3-pointers with eight rebounds, four assists (including two alley-oop passes) and two blocks Saturday afternoon as the host Hoyas beat Mount St. Mary’s 83–72.
Styles leads the 2–2 Hoyas in scoring at 15.8 points per game, shooting 47.7% from the floor and 47.4 from 3-point range, and averaging 6.8 rebounds. He topped his previous career-high of 15 points, which he scored in the opener against Le Moyne and vs. Rutgers.
Saturday, Styles was 8 of 15 from the floor and 3 of 6 from 3-point range.
“I thought we got better again today,” Georgetown coach Ed Cooley said. “There were some hiccups, but I thought that we improved from the last game to this game, and that’s what we are looking for as we are building.”
Georgetown led by double digits for most of the game and had to hold off a late Mountaineers rally.
The Hoyas led 43–31 at halftime, and a Styles free throw gave them a 57–41 edge with 14:10 left.
After Mount St. Mary’s cut the lead to 61–50 with 11:37 remaining, a Styles free throw pushed the lead back to 14.
It’s a quick turnaround for Georgetown, which plays American at 4:30 Sunday (FS1).
Dawson Garcia has 14 points, six rebounds, two assists and two blocks in Minnesota’s 67–53 home victory over USC Upstate. The Gophers (3–1) are at home against Arkansas-Pine Buff at 9 p.m. Tuesday (Big Ten Network).
In Rutgers’ 80–51 home win Saturday over Saint Francis, Destiny Adams collected 11 points, four rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal and leads the team with a 14.4 scoring average for the 3–2 Scarlett Knights women
Rutgers plays at home Monday against Fairfield.
In the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas, the No. 23 Ole Miss women knocked off Howard 67–43, and face either Arizona or Memphis in Sunday’s semifinals.
Kennedy Todd-Williams had three points, three rebounds and a steal in 22 minutes for the 2–1 Rebels.
