Dontrez Styles continued his productive weekend for Georgetown on Sunday, when Tyler Nickel had his best game since joining Virginia Tech and Caleb Love had a good all-around game in another romp for No. 4 Arizona.
Styles, who scored 26 points in Saturday’s 83–72 Hoyas victory over Mount St. Mary’s, collected his second double-double Sunday with 22 points and 11 rebounds in Georgetown’s 86–63 overtime victory over American University.
“You get an opportunity to come here and play a lot of minutes. I feel like I’m getting more comfortable and gaining more confidence by the day,” Styles said after Saturday’s game.
The Hoyas (3–2), who are off until a noon Saturday home game against Jackson State (FS2), rallied from an 11-point deficit with 6:19 left in regulation. Styles scored on a drive with 3:13 left in regulation to trim the Hoyas’ deficit to three.
In overtime, Georgetown made all six free-throw attempts.
Styles leads the Hoyas in scoring (17 points per game) and 3-point shooting percentage (40%) while shooting 46.8% from the floor. He’s second on the team in rebounding at 7.6 per game.
After missing Virginia Tech’s previous game due to illness, Nickel collected 14 points, two assists and two steals in the Hokies’ 98–76 home win over Wofford.
Nickel, who converted a four-point play early in the game, didn’t miss from the floor, making all three 3-point attempts to help Virginia Tech (3–1) go 10 of 20 from outside the arc.
The Hokies head to Kissimmee, Fla., for the ESPN Events Invitational (link to bracket), where they will meet Boise State in an 8 p.m. first-round game on Thursday. Virginia Tech could face Penn State, with Dontrez Styles and Puff Johnson, on Sunday on the event’s final day, in either the championship or fifth-place game.
Love contributed 10 points, six rebounds, six assists (against only one turnover), and two steals in the Wildcats’ 101–56 victory over UT Arlington.
Arizona (5–0) made it a rout with 20 consecutive first-half points after the Mavericks had taken a five-point lead. Love’s 3-pointer with 3:35 left gave the Wildcats a 35–32 lead.
Kennedy Todd-Williams’ No. 22 Ole Miss team advanced to the championship game of the Battle 4 Atlantis (link to bracket) in the Bahamas with a 56–47 win Sunday over Arizona. Todd-Williams, who has started all five games for the 4–1 Rebels, had seven points, seven rebounds, two steals and an assist in 30 minutes.
The Rebels, who meet Michigan at noon Monday in the championship game (Flo Sports), rallied from an 11-point second-quarter deficit, taking their first lead with a 13–0 third-quarter run.
