How and when to watch UNC teams on busy Thanksgiving week

By R.L. Bynum

It’s a busy Thanksgiving week for Carolina athletics, and many fans will probably plan their holiday schedule around watching the Tar Heels play.

But when do they play, and how can you watch as the basketball teams face more challenging competition, the soccer teams continue their pursuit of national championships and the football and volleyball teams play the last games on their schedules?

Here’s a guide to when UNC plays 10 games over six sports through Sunday, and how you can watch. The good news is that there will likely be little or possibly no overlap between games.

Men’s basketball

Coach Hubert Davis’ 3–0 No. 14 Tar Heels play in the Bahamas at the eight-team Battle 4 Atlantis, and beat Northern Iowa 91–69 in the first round on Wednesday.

On Thanksgiving Day, UNC will play Villanova (4–1), which beat Texas Tech in the second semifinal 85–69, at 2:30 p.m. on ESPN.

With a Thursday win, Carolina will play in the 3:30 Friday championship game on ESPN against the winner of the 5 p.m. Thursday semifinal between Memphis (3–0) and No. 20 Arkansas (4–1). With a Thursday loss, the Tar Heels would face the loser of that other semifinal at 1 p.m. Friday on ESPN2.

Unlike last season when the Tar Heels were playing in Portland, there’s no chance that their game will conflict with the football game.

Women’s basketball

Carolina heads to Estero, Fla., to play in the eight-team Gulf Coast Showcase but watching those games will be trickier and pricier.

It will only stream on FloHoops, which you can only watch if you subscribe. If you purchase a one-year subscription, it’s $12.50 per month or $150. If you just want to watch the Tar Heels this week, you’ll still have to subscribe for 30 days, costing $32.24 once tax is added. If you do that, don’t forget to cancel so you don’t get charged for another month.

If you can’t stream it live, all games are archived on the site.

Coach Courtney Banghart’s 4–0 Tar Heels play Vermont (3–1) at 1:30 Friday in the tournament’s first round. On Saturday, they meet No. 16 Kansas State (4–0) or Western Kentucky (4–1). That game will be at 5 p.m. with a Friday victory and at 11 a.m. with a loss.

On Sunday, the Tar Heels will play at 7:30 p.m. if they make the championship game, 5 p.m. if they are in the consolation game and 1:30 if they are in the fifth-place game. That means that their Saturday game won’t conflict with the football game.

Potential opponents on the third day are No. 5 Iowa (4–1), featuring Caitlin Clark, Purdue Fort Wayne (2–1), Delaware (1–1) and host Florida Gulf Coast (3–1).

Football

Carolina (8–3, 4–3 ACC) tries to rebound from Saturday’s loss at Clemson in an 8 p.m. game at N.C. State (8–3, 5–2) that will air on ACC Network. Wes Durham will be on the play-by-play call for the broadcast with Tim Hasselbeck as the analyst and Taylor Tannebaum as the sideline reporter.

Women’s soccer

Anson Dorrance’s No. 13-ranked and No. 3-seed Tar Heels (13–1–8) will play No. 6-ranked and No. 1-seed Brigham Young (19–2–3) in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament at 8 p.m. ET Friday in Provo, Utah. The winner goes to the Women’s College Cup, which will again be played in Cary.

You must be an ESPN+ subscriber to access the streaming broadcast on espn3.com. An annual subscription is $109.99 ($9.16 per month) or $10.99 per month otherwise. You can subscribe to The Disney Bundle for $14.99 monthly and also get Hulu and Disney.

Unlike Sunday when UNC’s game overlapped with the field hockey NCAA championship game, there won’t be a conflict with another Tar Heels game unless the men’s basketball team is in the fifth-place game.

Men’s soccer

Coach Carlos Somoano’s No. 7-ranked and No. 3-seed Tar Heels (11–3–6) will play their second-round match in the NCAA tournament at Dorrance Field at 5 p.m. Sunday against No. 17-ranked and No. 14-seed Hofstra (14–3–4). If you can’t make it to Chapel Hill for the game, there will be a streaming ESPN+ broadcast you can access at espn3.com.

It’s possible that this match will conflict with Carolina’s third women’s basketball game in Estero, Fla.

Volleyball

Under first-year coach Mike Schall, the Tar Heels (12–14, 6–11 ACC) finish their season in Carmichael Arena at 2 p.m. Friday against Duke (19–9, 10–7), which beat UNC 3–1 on Oct. 25 in Durham. The game will stream on ESPN3, but it’s free to attend the game in person.
