Tar Heels in pros: White hits 26 as Bulls jump out to biggest lead since Jordan era; Nance scores 29 in G League; Kessler blocks seven shots

By R.L. Bynum

Coby White continued his outstanding play on Thursday and helped Chicago jump out an early lead the Bulls haven’t seen since Michael Jordan led the way.

White was amazing again, with a game-high 26 points and four 3-pointers as Chicago opened the game with a 33–8 run and held on for a 124–116 victory in the first of two games in three days at Miami.

White’s 3-pointer with 3:54 left in the first quarter gave Chicago a 25-point lead, the Bulls’ largest opening-quarter advantage since Jordan’s Bulls led by 27 points over Golden State on Jan. 31, 1997. Chicago made 13 of its first 17 shots Thursday.

With a season-high 11 assists and seven rebounds, White surpassed 1,000 for his career in both categories. The 11 assists were his most since he had 11 at Dallas last season on April 7, when he scored 24 points. He had one turnover in 40 minutes.

“He deserves all the credit,” Chicago coach Billy Donovan said. “He works. He looks internally. He tries to get better. I’ve got great respect for him.”

He put up a 24.8 game score, giving him scores of more than 20 in five of his last six games.

White led four players with at least 23 points, the first time four Bulls have done that since 1969. White extended his franchise record of consecutive games with at least three 3-pointers to 13.

In his last seven games, he’s averaging 26.1 points, is shooting 49.6% from the floor, 50.7% from out side the arc with 9.9 3-pointers per game and 78.8% from the free-throw line with 4.7 free throws per game. He’s averaging 6.1 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 1.9 turnovers in 40.1 minutes.

It was the 100th start of White’s career and his second game with at least 20 points and at least 10 rebounds, the first coming last season against Dallas on April 7 with 24 points and 11 assists.

In the G League, Pete Nance scored 15 of his 29 points in the first half and finished with three 3-pointers with four rebounds, four assists and three blocks but his Cleveland Charge lost Thursday at Iowa 118–115.

Walker Kessler put up a double-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds, seven blocks (tying his career-high) and four assists in Utah’s 122–114 win at Portland. The seven blocks were the most made by any player in the NBA on Thursday.
